Merville overcome Manor

MERVILLE United picked up a huge three points as they defeated Manor Rangers in Cleveragh in The Sligo Southern Hotel Super League.

Merville were first out of the blocks as they ripped into a shellshock­ed Manor Rangers with Malachy Spratt on fire.

His glorious hat trick was added to by Ryan Hargadon to give Merville a four goal cushion at the break.

Manor settled better in the second half and ex-Calry Bohs and Yeats United hit man Paul Logan rifled home two superb goals but it wasn’t enough as Merville stood solid and in the end took three brilliant points.

Aughanagh Celtic were at home to Ballisodar­e United and the visitors went ahead on twenty minutes through Andrew Patton. Aughanagh kept pressing and were rewarded two minutes from the break when Seamus Kane struck the equaliser.

The second half was all Aughanagh and Seamus Kane was the toast of Ballinafad hitting his second goal ten minutes into the second half and then four minutes from time capping off a great display netting his hat trick for a jubilant Aughanagh Celtic.

Glenview Stars got back to winning ways at Forthill when they welcomed Ballymote Celtic to the hill.

Ballymote Celtic went ahead after 22 minutes when Mark Irwin fired them into the lead that they held for ten minutes into the second half.

Stars were in attack mode and Ronan O’Grady blasted home a tremendous goal to level the game.

Both sides now went in search of that elusive winner and twenty minutes from time it was Gino O’Boyle who headed powerfully into the back of the Ballymote net to capture all three points for Stars.

Cartron United still remain the only unbeaten side in the Andrew Mullen Sligo Pallets Premier league but they had to fight all the way to keep this record intact as they travelled to Riverstown to take on the mighty Arrow Harps. The first half saw both sides attacking but defences were to the fore and goals were scarce.

Arrow Harps broke the deadlock ten minutes into this exciting encounter when Ben Tuohy crashed home the opener for Arrow Harps. Cartron despite their best efforts looked doomed to their first league defeat but their never say die attitude was rewarded on ninety minutes.

A free kick from the edge of the penalty area was taken by John Harte and his brilliant execution seen the ball in the back of the net and it was level pegging.

That was it, or so one thought as both sides were still determined to get a winner and four minutes into injury time the ball broke loose for Joe Kilcullen who raced clear of the Harps defence to hit the winner for Cartron United in what was one of the best games seen at the Park in the last few years.

North Sligo pace setters Cliffoney Celtic were at home to Real Tubber.

It was nip and tuck all the way with Cliffoney taking the lead sixteen minutes from time when Gary O’Connor gave them the lead. Real Tubber continued to battle away and were rewarded five minutes from time when Fergal Mc Donagh cracked home the equaliser.

Coolaney United made their trip to Grange a richly rewarding one hitting Benbulben for six without reply. Stanley Harte opened the floodgates for Coolaney with Denis Kozyrau, John Johnston netting a goal each, Sean Doyle scored twice and Cathal Davey netted from the penalty spot for a rampant Coolaney United.

Riverstown Masters entertaine­d Gurteen Celtic at the Showground­s Astro on Saturday night. Gurteen proved too strong with Dylan Walsh hitting four goals and Tony Taylor adding two more to give Gurteen a decisive victory. The masters scored once through ex junior internatio­nal John Joe Reilly who rolled back the years with a masterful display.

In the T P Brennan Connacht Cup last 32 Carbury recorded a huge win over a strong Westport United side.

Both sides have an excellent pedigree and Carbury are still unbeaten in the league.

Carbury answered all the questions Westport asked of them and more and more.

current junior internatio­nal Niall Brennan put Carbury ahead seven minutes from half time.

The second half saw the Carbury defence remain rock solid and ten minutes from time Gary Armstrong added the second goal that fired Carbury into the last sixteen of the T P Brennan Connacht Cup.

They will face West United of Galway in the last 16 in March.-
