Mercy College’s €3m boost

MERCY College, Sligo has received a significan­t funding boost from the Government.

THE Department of Education and Skills has approved a funding package for the replacemen­t of classrooms and prefabs at the secondary school.

The announceme­nt was made by Fine Gael T.D. and Assistant Government Chief Whip, Tony McLoughlin.

He stated: “I am delighted to see that this very important secondary school in Sligo has now received confirmati­on of this much needed boost to their facilities as they have been seeking this funding for this for some time.

“Having seen the difficulti­es at first hand with the older classrooms at the school, and the need for upgrades to more modern facilities, I made strong representa­tions on behalf of the school management to the Minister’s office in order to highlight to the Department the urgent need for this investment.

“I am delighted to see now that these efforts have paid off and I want to congratula­te the school management on their efforts,” he said.

The new accommodat­ion approved for the college includes: 1x58m2 General classroom, 3x 15m2 SET room (Prefab replacemen­t), 1x 89m2 Textile room, 1x 89m2 Science Lab/Prep area, 1x 119m2 Art/Craft Room, 1x 149m2 Engineerin­g Room/Prep area, 2 Classroom SEN base, and Ancillary works.

Mercy College has welcomed the Department of Education’s funding which will allow the expansion of the school campus.

Principal Colette O’Hagan, outlined that the plans include a new build of two special classrooms for students with autism, textile room, science lab, art and design studio, engineerin­g room and two general purpose classrooms.

Ms O’Hagan added: “The school community and I are delighted with this recognitio­n from the Department of Education of the vibrancy and growth of the school.”

Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan has welcomed the funding approval by the Department. “I am delighted that funding has been granted for a series of important developmen­ts at Mercy College.

“I want to compliment the Board of Management and the whole school for their hard work in ensuring this funding has been secured for these facilities. I also want to sincerely thank my colleague, Minister for Education Joe McHugh for his strong support in relation to the strategic plan being set out by the school.

“Mercy College has a long and a very proud tradition in education and these additional facilities represent clear evidence that the school is going from strength to strength.”
