NEW CRANMORE ROAD LAYOUT CONFUSION

- By PAUL DEERING

RESIDENTS living in Sligo’s biggest housing estate have been left perplexed by a new road layout on its main through road.

A the new design has radically changed the approach to the junction of Devins Drive and the Cranmore Road.

What was a two way road has been transformed so that there is now an additional junction before the main road in which traffic exiting the Cranmore estate has to yield to oncoming traffic.

The new layout hasn’t gone down well with locals with many taking to social media to criticise what is being felt is one of the oddest junctions ever created in Sligo.

Fears have ben expressed that a driver, unaware of the new route will plough into the traffic island which is situated in the middle of what used to be a single carriageway.

A small cycle lane has also been created but cyclists are not required to yield to oncoming traffic.

Construction works on the upgrade of the junction at Cranmore Road and Devins Drive began in the summer of 2019.

The works were completed recently and involved the realignment of the junction and the introduction of traffic calming measures.

There has been complaints for some time about speeding traffic in the area and in particular along Devins Drive and the approach to the Cranmore junction.

However, opinion is certainly divided whether or not the new layout will have the desired effect.

Several locals feel there will be accidents at the junction.

The work is the first stage of improvement works to Devins Drive as contained in the Sligo East City, Cranmore and Environs Regeneration Masterplan 2016 which is promoted by Sligo County Council and the Cranmore Regeneration Project Team.

The council was contacted for a comment but hadn’t done so at the time of going to press.
