PRIEST SHORTAGES

Best wishes are extended to Fr Martin Jennings, who is absent on sick leave from his Parochial duties in Tubbercurry and Cloonacool.

At the moment Mass and Ceremonial duties are shared by a cluster of priests from the surrounding parishes and visiting priests. The fact is that now, there is no resident priest in the Tubbercurry/Cloonacool Parish, and this is not the only parish nationwide that is suffering from a similar problem.

JACKIE COOGAN

The ‘ singing barber’ Jackie Coogan celebrated a milestone 80th birthday at the beginning of January, and his friends helped him celebrate it in style. As well as various community roles, Jackie also played on various bands over the years and is an excellent singer and piano accordion player. Now retired from his work as a barber, he is considering re-developing his music and singing career and various offers have been made to him which he is considering at present. The sudden and unexpected death occurred just a few days before Christmas of Paddy McIntyre, late of Ballyara, Tubbercurry. In his early ‘70’s, Paddy was a well-known and highly respected member of the entire South Sligo Community, and was pre-deceased just a few years ago by his wife Agnes. Paddy was a carpenter by trade, and also a very accomplished plasterer, and worked as a tradesman and supervisor on many of the large building developments in Sligo town and Tubbercurry over the last 30 to 40 years. Large developers in Sligo town considered themselves lucky to have Paddy on their team.

As a hobby, Paddy’s passion was shooting and hunting. He was a very accomplished Clay Pidgeon Shooter, and won many cups and trophies throughout Connacht since the early 1970s. He also loved to take to the fields, bogs and mountains with friends and dogs to hunt fox, woodcock, duck, pheasant and grouse, and a day with Paddy was always an enjoyable and interesting one. Paddy was always a great husband, father and friend, and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He was quiet and unassuming, and always saw the good in everybody.

His remains reposed at his house where many friends called to pay their respects to a true gentleman. His funeral Mass was held in the Church of St John Evangelist, Tubbercurry, and burial took place in Rhue Cemetery. Mayo, Joe moved to Tubbercurry in the 1960s after marrying his beloved Evelyn, a marriage of 65 years. He also had a good farm to attend, work he did with pride and dedication. Christenings, Communions, weddings, Anniversaries, and Jubilees of all sorts were caught on camera over the last 40 years by Christy. He was also a kind and gentle person who was a friend to many. There she met and married her husband Philip and lived there for many years before returning to Ireland and eventually Tubbercurry. Despite being in England for many years, she was a regular visitor home to visit family and friends in Lavagh, as she loved the views like everybody of Knocknashee and the Ox Mountains. The life of Bridget and Philip was not without tragedy as they were pre-deceased by their daughter Dympna and son Eamon, and Philip died within the last few years.
