Doctor allegedly stabs colleague
A doctor received a head wound after being allegedly stabbed by a colleague at Sligo University Hospital.
The incident which occurred around 9.15am last Thursday has sent shockwaves around the hospital.
Gardaí and the hospital authorities are investigating the incident which saw the male doctor allegedly stabbed by a female doctor while both working in a busy department. A sharp instrument, believed to have been a scalpel is alleged to have been used to inflict a cut to the doctor’s forehead.
He apparently rushed to the Emergency Department immediately after the incident while the female doctor was allegedly held in a room while Gardaí were called.
Gardaí, who were already in the hospital on another matter rushed to the ward and spoke with the alleged stabber.
THE doctors at the centre of a bizarre incident last Thursday at Sligo University Hospital had been in employment there for quite some time and were both due to leave soon in any event.
Hospital authorities and the Gardaí are both carrying out investigations into the incident which occurred on a busy ward at 9.15am last Thursday.
The incident has shocked staff and patients at the hospital.
A female doctor is alleged to have stabbed a male doctor, said to be in his 40s, in the forehead with a scalpel.
The doctor ran from the ward to the Emergency Department to have his wound treated. It is understood he has left the hospital and is currently in Dublin.
He was due to shortly leave his employment at the hospital anyway as was his alleged attacker. Both doctors have been working at SUH for some time.
It is not known what led to the incident. The doctors are not believed to be related.
Gardaí, who were in the hospital dealing with another matter, went to the ward immediately on being informed of the alleged stabbing and it is understood the female doctor had been kept in a room.
A spokesperson for the SAOLTA group of hospitals which includes SUH said: “Sligo University Hospital is aware of an incident relating to two members of staff which is being fully investigated by the hospital in line with all appropriate procedures.
“The hospital will not be commenting further in relation to this matter.”
The Garda press office stated: “Gardaí in Sligo are investigating an alleged assault that took place at a hospital in Sligo on Thursday 9 th January at approximately 9.15am.
“A male in his 40s received treatment for his injuries. Investigation ongoing.”
It is not known at this stage if the male doctor has made an official statement of complaint.
In its absence, the Gardaí may be unable to bring a prosecution.
However, an internal hospital probe is likely to go ahead in due course.
