Call for urgent action at accident blackspot

-

FINE Gael General Election Candidate, Cllr Thomas Walsh has called on Sligo County Council to urgently address safety issues at a junction in Carraroe which has been the scene of several accidents, including a fatal one last November.

Cllr Walsh said he met with residents living close to Jinks Cross in Carraroe prior to December to discuss the issues pertaining to the junction.

He said there had been 14 accidents over a four year period there.

A local man in his 60s who was the sole occupant of a jeep died following an accident involving a van at the junction on November 19 th last.

The driver of the van was taken to Sligo University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“I have also met with the Sligo County Council’s engineering team accompanied by a delegation of residents on December 16 th last.

“Following the meeting we were reassured that there would be a number of measures introduced to address residents concerns.

“It was confirmed at the meeting that there would be a doubling up of signage on both approaches to the R284, from the NCT centre side and on the Drumiskabole side.

“An advanced stop sign is to be erected on both approaches also. The junction will also be re-lined.

Sligo County Council also confirmed at the meeting that they would seek a new lighting design for the junction as lighting is also very poor in the area. A narrowing of the road and kerbing will also be considered by the engineering team,” he said.

Cllr Walsh added: “We now need to see action on the measures outlined and make this junction safer for all users.”
