ST FARNAN’S LADIES

WELL done to Claire Dunne who captained the Connacht Post Primary Schools side in the Inter Provincial Series which took place in Kinnegad on Saturday. It is an indication of the growing esteem in which the Coláiste Iascaigh Leaving Cert student is held in Ladies Gaelic Football circles far outside the boundaries of her own home patch. She lined out at fullback for the side which reached the final of the competition by virtue of wins over Ulster and Leinster in the group stage and although Munster, who had earlier beaten them in the group stages also proved too strong in the decider, the girls from the West gave it their all and can be well pleased with their day’s work. The Sligo Ladies Intermediate team went down to neighbours Roscommon by 3-12 to 2-8 in their opening Div. 3 match in the current National League. The game, which was played in Boyle, proved to be a historic occasion from our club’s perspective in that four of our players were in the squad and all got game time. Last year’s panellists Jacqui Mulligan and Leah Kelly started the game at right corner back and right corner forward respectively whilst Rachel O’Brien made her Intermediate inter county debut in the opposite corner forward position. The newcomer managed to get her name on the scoresheet with a goal in the second half. The afore mentioned Claire Dunne showed no after effects from her exertions with her province the previous day when introduced at centre half back for the second half. The side travel to play Kildare in Round 2 next Sunday. Best of luck to all concerned. Coláiste Iascaigh Senior Girls football team currently top their group in the Sligo Post Primary Schools league following wins over Colaiste Mhuire Ballymote, Jesus & Mary Secondary School Enniscrone and St. Attractas Tubbercurry and as a result have qualified for the final. There is a strong St. Farnan’s presence in the side with players such as Rachel and Emma O’Brien, Claire and Edel Dunne, Ciara Connolly, Katie Golden, Shona Lang, Ciara McGee, Leanne Rowlette, Eanna McGowan, Áine Weir, Jamie Murray and Eleanor Culkin all among the ranks. Their opponents in the final should become known in the coming week. Well done also to St. Farnan’s GAA player Paddy O’Connor on making a winning start as captain of the Sligo GAA team in their NFL Div. 4 clash with London on Sunday. Hopefully the victory will bring
