U15s advance to Connacht league final

SLIGO U15S BUCCANEERS 23 0

SLIGO U15 produced a controlled performance to progress to the League Final by defeating an able Buccaneers RFC side.

From the outset, playing into a stiff wind, Sligo’s intensity levels were evident with captain Ambrose Bamber winning a penalty turnover 1 minute into the game on the Buccaneers’ 22m line. The resultant penalty kick was slotted over by out half Oisín O’Neill to give Sligo a 3-0 lead.

Things got even better for Sligo 4 minutes into the game when centre Stefan Roche picked off a loose pass near the halfway line and raced under the posts for Sligo’s opening try converted by Oisín O’ Neill to leave Sligo leading 10-0.

The visitors raised their game for the next period but stout defending by Sligo ensured no attacking progress was made by Buccaneers.

17 minutes into the match Sligo extended their lead with prop Aran Platt crashing over for a try to increase Sligo’s lead to 15-0. The balance of the first half remained scoreless despite some fine attacking efforts by Buccaneers.

The visitors enjoyed a purple patch at the start of the second half in attack but the Sligo defence was resolute. The home side now playing with the wind advantage managed field position well.

Wing Ronan O’Hehir picked off a loose pass in the Buccaneers’ 22 and was unlucky not to finish with a try. Minutes later he set up a try with a mazy run, supported by his forwards, with fullback Robert O’ Kelly-Lynch scoring in the corner following slick handling by the Sligo backline.

Sligo, using the wind wisely, played the balance of the game in Buccaneers territory adding a superb penalty by Oisín O’ Neill to leave the final score 23-0 to Sligo.

Sligo now play Corinthians in the Connacht League Final on the weekend of 8/9th February.
