Mercy steals the show at Athlone race

OUR Lady of Mercy Primary school Sligo stole the show at the Diversity Games in Athlone. Last Thursday a group of 24 kids went to AIT internatio­nal arena for the prestigiou­s Diversity Games. Teams compiled of either 4 or 5 kids from 3rd and 4th class for Junior or 5th and 6th for Senior. The day got off to a flyer for the junior boys with William Vkaegbu getting second in the junior boys 60m.In the long jump Our Lady of mercy excelled in all 4 age categories with Oliwia Karpiak securing second in the junior girls, Bruno Zamolowski matching her result with a brilliant second for the boys, Ruadhan Sheerin got a brilliant third place for the Senior boys and maximum points went to the Senior girls with a brilliant win for Emily Hession.

Back on the track Oliwia Karpiak secured more points for the girls with a brilliant second place in the 150m, this was matched with a brilliant second place finish by Adam Farrell in the junior girls.

In the longer race over 400m Sophia Murrin put in an exceptiona­l performanc­e to gain third spot and more points for the senior girls.

Onto the relays and double points on offer. The Junior girls were clear cut winners of their finals, matched again by the Junior boys with an emphatic victory in theirs.

The senior teams weren’t to be outdone either with the Senior girls only beaten by an exceptiona­l Merlin Park from Galway and the boys ran with brilliant determinat­ion for 5th place in their relay overall.

The points were counted and Our Lady of Mercy came away with the overall win in the junior boys category, a very very close third in the junior girls category, a brilliant second in the Senior girls category and a fine 8th place overall in the Senior boys category.

Afterwards Enda Connolly rammed up the power of sport and the impact it has on the kids in the school; “after the Primary schools relay and the cross country success and all the other sporting events the kids get away to, the memories it is creating and the chat and the banter they are having is resulting in wanting more”.
