VENETIAN SPLENDOUR

Resurgam, Ireland’s acclaimed professional choral ensemble, continues to bring the glories of seventeenth century Europe to the west of Ireland - and in February 2020, for the first time, to Sligo and the sumptuous surroundings of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Resurgam teams up with the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, and special guest ensemble Sligo Cathedral Choir, in presenting VENETIAN SPLENDOUR, a celebration of Monteverdi’s masterwork Selva Morale e Spirituale. The unique tones of period brass coupled with dazzling vocals will fill the cathedral with glorious sound, and transport listeners to seventeenth century Venice – La Serenissima, famed for its music, art and architecture.

Here is an opportunity to experience the unique soundworld of this renowned city of romance, for an hour in Sligo’s sublime landmark venue, and still with time for dinner afterwards - the perfect Valentine’s Day treat!

The event takes place on Friday 14 th February at 7pm at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Temple Street.

Tickets (€10 - €20) are available from Hawks Well Theatre and online at Eventbrite or at the door on the night.

YOUNG CURATORS WANTED

Ever fancied running a festival or having a behind the scenes peek? Or wanted to bring your favourite musician or artist to Sligo? Now’s your chance.

Cairde Sligo Arts Festival (CSAF) returns from July 4 th to 12 th 2020. As part of this year’s programme, festival organisers are seeking to connect with younger audiences from across County Sligo.

Cairde Young Curators, is a major new initiative for the festival, focussing on those aged between 15 and 19 years. The festival is currently inviting young people to join this new initiative and have their input on the festival programme this summer.

The project will see a team of young curators work with the Festival team to program a special element of this year’s festival. The project will commence in mid February and run right up until the arts festival itself in July, where the young curators will meet, brainstorm ideas, research, explore, plan, document, get inspired and select their potential event. This event may come in the form of a live music gig, an interactive workshop, a visual art exhibition or none of the above - most importantly the ideas will come from the team - Giving a younger audience an opportunity to have their say in what is on offer during the arts festival.

If you would like to join this group, Cairde Sligo Arts Festival invites you to send in a short statement saying why you would like to be involved by Monday the 3rd of February to: cairdeyoungcurators@gmail.com

SLIGO ACTS

The Hawk’s Well Theatre are putting a call out for all those interested in acting to get involved in their drama programme for adults, ‘Sligo Acts’ which gets underway shortly. This is the third year of this popular acting programme which saw over 30 actors rehearse and perform on stage in 2018 with a show entitled ‘Husbands and Wives’ and another 30 actors rehearsed and performed in ‘Sligo Acts: Love’ in 2019.

The Sligo Acts programme was inspired by the great success of the Sligo Sings programme at the theatre and the positive feedback from the ongoing Acting for Adults courses which have been running at the theatre over the last four years (hosted by Bob Kelly, Jean Marie Perinetti, Isabel Claffey and currently Margaret Kilcoyne). The Sligo Sings programme has encouraged singers of all abilities and levels to come together in a non-competitive environment and focuses on participation, inclusiveness and, most of all enjoyment. In the same vein, Sligo Acts is a fun acting programme suitable for all levels of experience - those with plenty of performances under their belt and those just starting to tread the boards.

An introductory workshop for all those interested will take place at the theatre on Sunday 2nd of February from 2 to 5pm. At this fun drama workshop, interested participants will find out all about the programme and will take part in some acting workshops with Directors Julie Sharkey, Isabel Claffey and Niall Colleary.

The cast of actors will then start rehearsing for their big performance which this year will take place on Sunday 24 th of May at the theatre.

To register for the introductory workshop on Sunday 2nd of February and to find out more about the Sligo Acts programme, email maeve@hawkswell.com
