Castleconnor
HANDBALL CLUB
On behalf of everyone involved in Castleconnor handball club, we would like to congratulate every player who participated yesterday in the annual Gerard Jones memorial handball tournament.
Everyone who participated and attended as spectators will all agree that some of the finest games of handball were played yesterday.
It was a day where the young guns showed us all how a game of handball should be played and what a performance from all of the new young lads who played their hearts out and shed blood sweat and tears to try and covet the prestigious cup.
We also had exhilarating games between old rivals who battled it out to the bitter end and left everything in the alley so between all players they gave the enthusiastic spectators something to get excited and stirred up about.
In the end the winners of the coveted cup were two young players Cormac Finn and Eoin Fox, who showed everyone that the future of handball in the area is very much alive and kicking. Hard luck to club members Martin and Patrick Cooney, who were beaten in the final.
By no means was the day over as the plate final gave us handball supporters something to salivate over as the pairing of Jason Earlis and Seán Leonard fought a tough battle against Michael Browne and Darragh Sweeney to take the plate title for 2020. What a spectacle of a tight encounter that left everyone sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation and guessing who would win.
Well done to all players who came from Castleconnor, Bofield, Collooney, Drumcliff, Ballinrobe and not forgetting killala (just for you Joe).
We also would like to thank Bofield handball club for the use of their alley and facilities. A big thank you to all the kitchen helpers and to all who baked, cooked, served, and cleaned. Thank you to all the spectators who made the day and had the craic.
We want to say a big thank you to Gerry Curley from Office Pro, who sponsors us every year and gives his time. It’s very much appreciated.
We look forward to next year’s tournament already and no doubt we will have more young guns ready to show off their handball skills.
