Papal honour for Ignatius’ church dedication
RETIRED Principal of Rockfield National School, Ignatius was honoured on Sunday, 2nd February 2nd last, the Feast of the presentation of the Lord, the Benemerenti Medal for his outstanding service to Parish of Killoran - Coolaney from September 1979 to the present day.
Benemerenti awards are Pontifical decorations conferred upon exceptional people who have inspired others by their commitment, dedication and service to their local church. It was originally established as an award to soldiers in the Papal Army.
The actual medal is a gold Greek cross depicting the image of Christ, his Hand is raised in blessing. The current version of the Benemerenti medal was designed by Pope Paul VI.
On the left of the transverse arm of the cross, is a depiction of the Papal tiara and the keys of St. Peter, and to the right is the shield of the reigning Pope and his motto. On the reverse is the word Benemerenti, which means “well merited”.
The Benemerenti medal was instituted by Pope Gregory XVI in 1832 and may be merited by either men or women.
The gold medal is accompanied by a parchment in Latin, issued by Pope Francis, which may be translated as follows: “The supreme Pontif Francis using his power to honor by a mark of distinction has seen fit to bestow upon Ignatius Henry the gold medal Benemerenti, established for those, exceedingly well deserving in Christian service. From the Household of the Vatican.”
Mr Henry retired as Principal of Rockfield National School, Coolaney after 32 years of service in 2010.
