Parents concerned over traffic congestion at Rockfield N.S.

-

THERE are growing concerns over the issue of parking and traffic congestion at Rockfield National School in Coolaney.

Fine Gael Councillor Dara Mulvey said this is an issue that is causing concern in Coolaney. “It’s very dangerous at times. Locals and parents have asked to consult with Sligo County Council on what can be done about this.

“The school is at maximum. At peak times there is serious congestion problems like for school, mass, funerals and weddings.”

Councillor Mulvey said he was told that the parking may have to be brought off road to secure a safe parking zone.

Director of Services, Tom Kilfeather said in response: “The acquisition of land adjacent to Rockfield N.S and Rockfield church is the first step in providing additional car parking in the area. This will have to be achieved by the school’s Board of Management or the church parish council.

“Sligo County Council will work with the community in Coolaney/Rockfield to help with improving car parking infrastructure in the area (but the provision of school car parking is the responsibility of the Board of Management and the Department of Education.” INDEPENDENT Cllr. Michael Clarke said: “There is the morning when cars land to drop children off to school it is bumper to bumper. It’s very dangerous. Coolaney is continuing to grow in population, there’s a very young population there. It’s important that the council help.

“WHAT we don’t want to see is some child being help. The council needs to take action,” Cllr. Clarke added.
