Cranmore Road junction layout will be reviewed

-

SLIGO County Council will review the Devins Drive/Cranmore Road junction project and take on board the comments on councillors, following a number of complaints regarding the new layout.

At the February monthly meeting of Sligo County Council, Independent Councillor Declan Bree queried whether or not the new layout complied with department regulations, and if the Road Safety Authority is satisfied with it.

Cllr. Bree said: “We are advised that all works are complete on the improvements to the junction at Cranmore Road and Devins Drive. However, I have to say that I have been contacted by numerous residents of Cranmore who have expressed significant concern with the new road layout and traffic calming measures on Devins Drive near Government buildings.

“Many residents fear there will be accidents as a result of the new road layout. I have to admit that I have never come across a road layout similar to it in my years of driving.”

Fine Gael’s Cllr. Sinead Maguire said she too has been in contact with members of the public who have also outlined their concerns to her. She said the large boulders do not prevent people from walking across in front of cars.

Director of Services Bartley Gavin said the council would take the complaints on board, and that the junction was designed in accordance with the urban roads manual. “That includes one element of traffic calming where one lane has to give way to another,” he said. “We’ ll look at the pedestrian issue. The boulders are designed to prevent vehicles mounting the kerb.”

Council Chief Executive Ciaran Hayes said that a number of health and safety issues are examined during stages of the introduction of a junction like this such as the stage they are currently at, the period of operation. He added that these safety issues will be taken into account.

Cllr. Gino O’Boyle asked if three more road blocks are to go in place. Gavin confirmed that more traffic calming measures are to be introduced on that street.
