WEEKEND Results

THE Juvenile section started off early on Saturday morning and their blitz against Westport RFC was a windy affair, but the rain held off, much to the delight of the 200 players, coaches and parents.

The U14 Girls got the nod that their game would go ahead at 12.30, but conditions deteriorated rapidly and the game was a muddy affair, with high winds and driving rain.

The small crowd huddled in the shelter of the clubhouse, but the 30 girls on the pitch all showed great resolve and determination to battle against Storm Ciara.

It was a very close game in tough conditions.

Sligo trailed 5-12 at the halfway mark and a single score from the visitors in the second half, was enough to secure Ballinasloe RFC’s place in the Connacht U14 Cup semi-final.

The history-makers, Sligo U18.5 Girls, travelled to Colts Park, home of Claremorris RFC to play their Connacht Cup Quarter Final.

This was the first cup game ever played by a Sligo U18.5 team.

Conditions were bitterly cold and wet, but the girls battled from start to finish against a strong home side, who emerged the deserved winners with a 36-7 score line. STORM Ciara was the only winner on Sunday as the Sligo U17s V Creggs challenge match and the U13 league game against Castlebar RFC were both postponed.

The first pitch was closed due to the heavy rains, but the newly-developed second pitch was a credit to the grounds’ team and was deemed suitable for play in advance of the scheduled Ard na Cregg Cup game on Sunday afternoon. However, Storm Ciara put paid to

Loughrea RFC’s travel plans and the Gulls’ game was also postponed.
