Remanded again on doctor assault charge

-

A 24-year-old woman who allegedly bit a doctor on the hand while receiving medical attention has been further remanded in custody.

Nicole Chambers of No Fixed Abode appeared before Sligo District Court via video link on Thursday last.

Chambers appeared on video link from the Dóchas Centre, the closed, medium security prison for females, located in Mountjoy Prison.

It is alleged on April 11 th last at the Emergency Department of Sligo University Hospital Chambers assaulted Dr Edward Herridge causing him harm.

She was also charged with threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour, and with damaging a chair at the Emergency Department waiting room.

Addressing the court, Chambers said the prison remand had turned her life around and gave her a fright.

Judge Kilrane told Chambers her actions which are alleged to have included breaking a fire alarm at the hospital would have caused panic in many of the hospital patients.

Judge Kilrane said in order for Chambers to take up bail she would have to come out of prison into a stable place to live.

Solicitor, Mr Tom MacSharry informed the court that such a place was not currently available and the matter was adjourned to this Thursday to revisit the issue of bail being granted.
