An opportune time for a Greenway

-

AS Sligo Greenway Co-op approaches its 2020 AGM, they have issued a fresh appeal for political support in their efforts to bring the first Greenway to the county.

A statement from the group said: “The recent Covid-19 crisis has impacted greatly upon us all. However, it has also highlighted many fresh possibilities, especially for rural communities and rural living.

“A Greenway on the closed railway line between Charlestown and Collooney (and on to Sligo) will not just be a Greenway; it will be a green corridor. This green corridor will open up our region for a new way of life; a way of life where people can work from home, cycle to outside work and provide access to rural villages and schools.”

The group goes on to mention the roll-out of broadband and the need for safe recreational facilities for a ‘new normal’ way of life for families choosing to live in rural areas.

“The proposed greenway will fit perfectly into the economic vista we are now facing. Three very important areas of interest will be served. Firstly, struggling rural towns and villages will be connected allowing access to cheaper housing and increased use of local facilities and outlets. Secondly, working from home or cycling to work will be facilitated in a safer and greener way. Finally, new community growth needs new community facilities and there are few better or more cost-effective ways of providing this than through a Greenway.”

In recent weeks, the Sligo Greenway community group has been in contact with local Dail representatives to ensure the Sligo Greenway project is kept on the agenda at the government formation talks.

“There is money available for Greenways, there is even preparation funds available for planning greenway. We are delighted to be working with Sligo County Council in this regard but the project needs unequivocal political support.

“There is no more cost-effective project, with a shorter payback time, on offer for our region. Our request is that we all pull together to secure this guilt-edged opportunity.”

THE groups’ fifth AGM takes place on June 21st next. Like all such gatherings, it has been compromised by the current crisis so special arrangements for the meeting have been put in place. Notice of the meeting is being issued to shareholders early this week.
