More opportunit­ies for further education

AS TIME moves on, there are more and more opportunit­ies for further education after completing secondary school.

Whether it be a post-Leaving Cert course or progressio­n to one of the country’s third level institutio­ns, such as IT Sligo or NUI Galway, there are many options and importantl­y, all interests are catered for.

And, whether you are considerin­g the next step after the Leaving Cert, seeking to upskill while in employment or looking to change direction and go back to education, everyone can find a way that best suits their own situation.

The north west of the country is well served in terms of third level institutio­ns, with IT Sligo and St Angela’s, a college of the National University of Ireland, Galway, both in the Sligo area. Letterkenn­y IT in Donegal, as well as NUI Galway and Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology to the south of the province of Connacht.

While learning and college life tends to be associated with moving to the location of the college itself, there are other ways to learn. Particular­ly in the current circumstan­ces, online learning is likely to become even more prominent and this can offer another avenue to advance your education even if you have commitment­s in terms of family, work or otherwise that prevent you from attending the actual campus on a day-to-day basis.

Outside of the third level system, Further Education is a popular way of honing certain skills and interests through education and training. There are a number of different providers of Further and Adult Education and Training dotted all around the region and beyond. The Sligo College of Further Education is based locally.

Whatever your interests, and your plan, there is no doubt that opportunit­ies that fit your eye are certainly available within this region. If you want to further your education on a certain topic or in a certain sector, be sure to do your research in order to find a course that will help you in the long-term.
