GAA community mourning death of former player
THE GAA community has paid tribute to former Sligo and Tubbercurry footballer Peter James Brennan, Tubbercurry and formerly from Bunninadden who died on Wednesday.
He was a player, manager and lifelong member of Tubbercurry GAA club, winning a Senior County Championship with them in 1976.
Mr Brennan was also a regular on the Sligo Senior Football team since making his debut in 1967.
He initially began as goalkeeper and later moved on to the full-forward position.
Mr Brennan also featured on the Railway Cup team for a number of years, and also won a Railway Cup medal in 1969.
His club and county paid tribute to Mr Brennan for his invaluable contribution to
GAA in the county during his life.
Sligo GAA offered condolences to the Brennan family.
“Sligo GAA offer its sympathies to the family of Peter James Brennan R.I.P.
“Peter, a native of Roadstown, Bunninadden, worked and lived most of his life in Tubbercurry.
“He became an invaluable member of the local GAA Club and won a Senior County Championship medal with them in 1976.
“His 1st outing with the Sligo Senior Team was in 1967. He was a regular on the team for many years, first as Goalkeeper and later in the full forward position.
“The highlight of that time must have been May 5th 1968 when Sligo drew with Kildare in the National League Semi-Final in Croke Park. He enjoyed the honour of being picked on the Railway Cup Teams of 1969-71-72, winning a Railway Cup medal in 1969.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.” Tubbercurry GAA Club also paid tribute to Mr Brennan, who was a former player and manger with the club along with being a lifelong member.
“It is with great sadness we learn of the passing of Peter James Brennan, former Tubbercurry player, manager and lifelong member, we express our sincerest condolences to the Brennan family at this difficult time. May he Rest in Peace.”
John Prenty, Secretary of Connacht GAA also expressed sympathy on behalf of Connacht GAA to the Brennan family, as did Bunninadden GAA.
Many people described him as a great footballer who wore his club and county jersey with pride and passion.
Mr Brennan, of Edenvilla, Ballina Road, Tubbercurry is deeply missed and remembered with love by his wife, Mary, sons; John, Peter, Tommy and Patrick, daughters; Gráinne, Deirdre, Edel, Sarah and Helen, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, twenty grandchildren, sisters Úna, Mary and Philomena, brothers Seán, Mattie and Michael, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. Mass of the Resurrection took place on Friday in the Church of St. John Evangelist, Tubbercurry, with private burial thereafter in Rhue Cemetery. A Memorial Mass to celebrate Peter James’s life with extended family and friends will be held at a later date.
