Construction work on new link road commencing in ‘24
Monday’s Municipal meeting of the Borough District of Sligo heard that construction for the proposed new road linking the Mail Coach Road/Connolly St with the junction of Burton St/Pearse Road will commence this year.
Ms Emer Concannon, Director of Services responded to questions from Cllr Declan Bree to confirm that construction work on the new link road would commence this year.
Cllr Bree had asked: “With regard to the Schedule of Municipal District works to be carried out this year, which has been circulated to us I note that the initial allocation for the proposed new road which will link the junction of Mail Coach Road/Connolly Street with the junction of Burton Street/ Pearse Road is only €75,000.
“Last year we received €400,00 for that project and there was an expectation that work would commence on the new road before the end of 2023
“The project was delayed for many years due to insufficient funding being provided by the Department.
“Can we take it that there is now sufficient funding to allow construction work on the project to proceed this year?
“The ongoing delay has caused significant difficulties, especially for the residents of the lower St Bridget’s Place area because motorists are obliged to use lower St Bridget’s as an access road until such time as this new link road is constructed.
“In saying that I welcome the inclusion of funding for the resurfacing of the road in lower St Bridget’s Place and also the inclusion of funding for the resurfacing in Pilkington Terrace, Circular Road and Cleveragh,” Cllr Bree added.
