ARTS IN EDUCATION

The Arts in Education Portal have launched details of their Annual Regional Event which heads to the North West on Saturday 25 May 2024.

The Arts in Education Portal team are delighted to announce the full programme for our Spring Regional Day in Sligo at Sligo Education Centre. We invite teachers, artists, arts managers and anyone with an interest in arts in education in Donegal, Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo and beyond to join us for this free event.

Dr Katie Sweeney, National Director for the Integration of the Arts & Creativity in Education (DE) commented: “The Arts in Education Portal Spring Regional Day is a key event for the arts and creativity in education community.

“It brings together arts/creative and education professionals for a series of discussions and creative workshops, sharing experience and best practice from the arts and creativity in education sector.

“This year we are delighted to be connecting with practitioners across the North West.”

The programme includes presentations and panel discussions in the morning, and a choice of hands-on workshops for educators and creative practitioners engaged with early years, primary, post primary and Youthreach in the afternoon.

Triona O’Dowd Hill, teacher and Andy Parsons, artist, together with Lorna Kavanagh of Kids’ Own Publishing will present and discuss the collaborative journey embarked with St. Cecilia’s School.

This school caters for students with moderate to profound learning disabilities. Karen Brogan, a teacher from the West Sligo Creative Cluster, and Leslie Ryan, will share their cluster journey that explored themes within ecology and heritage through sculpture, sound and visual art.

She will show how they developed new and innovative ways of working co-operatively.

In the afternoon, it will be time for some creative sparks with a choice of two workshops. STEAM facilitator, Kathleen Gallagher, will provide delegates with comprehensive training on utilising Scratch, the visual programming language, and Makey Makey, a circuit building invention kit, to create interactive art projects.

Concurrently, Maeve Pudney will explore colour and pattern through Donegal yarn with educators, using a small weaving loom invented through her creative business ‘Pop Out Projects’.

Tickets for the 2024 Portal Spring Regional Day are free.

It is essential to book in advance as capacity is limited. Places can be booked on the Arts In Education Portal: www. artsineducation.ie.

TOM MORAN IS A BIG FAT FILTHY DISGUSTING LIAR

Following smash runs at Dublin Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe festivals, Tom Moran brings his eponymous Tom Moran is a Big Fat Filthy Disgusting Liar to the Hawk’s Well Theatre for a limited run on Wednesday, June 5.

Directed by Davey Kelleher, the award-winning one-man show has delighted audiences and critics alike and will come to Sligo following its run at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

Tickets for this Tom Moran and Abbey Theatre co-production are available directly from the Hawk’s Well.

Brimming with compassion and humour, Tom has a story to tell, some secrets to share and a future to fix. Tom is a self-proclaimed people-pleaser and expert in empathy - but someone who really struggles with the truth - in this hilarious but completely true solo show. It asks, “If I never lied again and was just myself, would any of my loved ones still love me?

Commenting, Tom Moran said: “This play possesses every drop of honesty I have. It was written with a thesis in mind, that human beings only lie in the presence of shame.

“I wanted to stop lying, to trust who I was. But like so many, guilt and shame held me back. And yet, so vitally, this play had to feel hopeful.

“Joyous, optimistic, hilarious, real. It’s for the people-pleasers amongst us, for the self-protective liars. It’s a compassionate journey to a complicated past, to salvage the most beautiful future. I’m delighted to be able to bring this work to audiences in Sligo.”
