How to form a cultural collective?
When you’re choosing a group of people to form a collective with, you should think beyond creative or professional assets and carefully consider the potential group chemistry and interpersonal dynamics. The most direct way to people’s hearts is with a homecooked meal so invite everyone over some night, chow down and chat shite. Welcoming the group into your personal space and showing them generosity establishes an environment of trust that is essential to the collective creative process. Be completely honest about your intentions and ambitions, but don’t push your expectations on others prematurely. Your role is to facilitate so you should observe, listen, encourage and empower. If all goes well and it feels natural, establish a new tradition and get the same group together once a month. If you can keep that up, you’re onto something good.
