HOW NOW

- – Michael McDermott

I’ll occasionally meet people who profess an interest in contributing to the creative well-being of this publication. They are usually photographers and writers who like the platform and freedom we present. They may wish to broaden the scope of their existing work or, merely, get a foothold in the game. And my advice is always the same.

The best way to illuminate your pathway into these pages is to see what has been accepted and published before. It’s really as simple as that. Research and understanding. Our fashion shoots are not those of bored models standing against walls or sitting on the lap of Luke Kelly. Our articles are not overviews of the ‘coffee scene’ in the city. If you read the magazine, you’ll know what we’re looking for. There are few things less bothersome than meeting someone who clearly hasn’t. The conversation rarely progress if they haven’t and second chances ain’t so often either.

These pages come out monthly so there’s little point chasing the ‘now’. It’s more a case of enabling the now to breathe, allow some reflection, step outside the scramble for relevance and acclaim. It works for some. It doesn’t for others. Such is life. We can only do our best given time, circumstances and resources.

And what about other careers and professions? What words of wisdom and insights have been gleaned from success and failure. We decided to tap up some people we respect and ask them – how? Hopefully, you’ll discover a motivation or mantra to aid you on your way to wherever you are going or hoping to reach.
