CALLING ALL strong men and women, the Clonard Weight Lifting Club need you!

The club which is based at Total Fitness Studios in Wespoint was started up 18 months ago is run by 20 times national weight lifting champion Liam Stewart.

Liam began weight lifting at the age of 15 when he was a teenager growing up in Inner City Dublin and he stumbled upon a gym running weight lifting classes.

He quickly became hooked and is now eager to get the message out to people in the Clonard/ Coolcotts district that they are open for business and eager to welcome new members to their ranks.

The club hope to tackle what they described as the ‘old fashioned attitude’ that women shouldn’t lift weights and are encouraging women to get involved.

The club has in its membership two international competitors.

Fifteen-year-old Robert Smith and 23- year- old Kevin Deegan represented the Clonard club in a recent international championships in Yorke, England.

Later this month Team Great Britain olympian Gareth Evans will facilitate a weight lifting workshop at the Clonard gym.

The club posted details of the workshop on Facebook and within two days the event was entirely booked up, as there was limited spaces on the programme.

Mick Kelly of Clonard Weight Lifting Club said, ‘ This is proof that a little club in Wexford can attract top athletes.’

Weight lifting training takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights from 7p.m. until 9p. m. and Saturday mornings from 11a.m. until 12 noon.
