Exploratory digs for gas pipeline
A SERIES of exploratory digs is under way in Wexford in preparation for the extension of the multi million Euro gas pipeline into the town centre.
Digging has been taking place in Rowe Street, Mary Street, John’s Gate Street, Slaney Street, Bride Street and King Street with a view to establishing the location of existing service pipes and the depth of the historic old Town Wall. A large number of staff including engineers and archaeologists are involved in the work.
‘We are currently digging trial holes in and around the town wall with an archaeological input to determine if there is any evidence of the town wall still existing below the road surface,’ said a spokesperson for Gas Networks Ireland.
The actual work is expected to begin next week along one of the main arteries into town at Whitemill where trial hole digging was also carried out in recent days.
The company said there will be some disruption to businesses and residents along the route but traffic management plans will be in place.
The Wexford Town Gas and Water Project is being delivered jointly by Gas Networks Ireland and Irish Water on behalf of Ervia, allowing gas and water infrastructure works to be completed together.
Meanwhile there was traffic disruption on the quays for several hours on Sunday as ESB Networks crews carried out cabling upgrade work on lines from Wexford bridge to the Crescent from 5 am to 2 pm.
ESB employees were out in force for nine hours working on the contract. The company issued an advance public warning advising motorists to use an alternative route during the improvement contract.
