WHAT YOU THINK OF THE COUNCILLORS’ DECISION...

-

ROBERT WHITE, WEXFORD

They are already taxing us with that tax and we had the household charge as well. I don’t think they should be taxing the householder anymore. There are other, more progressive methods of taxation. To try to top up this source of income doesn’t seem right.

MARGARET O’HANLON, NEW ROSS

I just think we are paying a lot of indirect tax at the moment and this is another one. It seems that the middle income earners are being squeezed again. I think there will be a lot of opposition to it. I think people will protest about this.

FRANCIS CARROLL, WEXFORD

It’s diabolical! This is a total abberation. It’s sufficient what we are paying now. The way they have it graded at the moment probably suits the populus that has a lesser income. I think they should overhaul the LPT. Sometimes I think that when councillors are at these meetings they try to think of something new to justify their jobs and let the public know they’re still thinking.

MARY HEFFERNAN, TULLOGHER

I don’t agree with it but we don’t have any choice. I think we are taxed enough between the Local Property Tax and water charges.

ROSEANNE GETHINGS, WEXFORD

I would ask the councillors what is being done with the road tax and toll money. Go around Belvedere Grove! If I burst another tyre they’ll be hearing about it. If we’re paying an extra fiver or tenner on our Local Property Tax it should go to providing houses for people. I wouldn’t pay it and I’d sooner go to jail.

JIM FITZGIBBON, NEW ROSS

I don’t like it but I have to go with it. When all the development was going on around the county New Ross was held back after the last recession. Stuff has to be done and money has to come from somewhere, even though I don’t want it to come out of my pocket.

AMY STILL, WEXFORD

It’s a bit ridiculous. You own your home after paying for it. It’s a bit rich, We have a young family and it’s a struggle as our finances are being hit all of the time. It’s very unfair but unfortunately we will have to pay it.

ANTHONY MURPHY, NEW ROSS

I suppose a tenner a year extra isn’t too much to pay providing it is used well. People are being squeezed through water charges and taxes and a lot of people mightn’t have the money. Maybe other options were open to them. New Ross is a seriously run down town and jobs are needed so if this helps to do somethng about that that would be great.

PHIL HYNES, WEXFORD

Obviously it’s not fair to householders. People’s finances have been hit more and more in recent times; there is no end to it. I’m afraid of my life of the Budget.

ANTHONY ANDERSON, NEW ROSS

New Ross needs developing and a tenner isn’t a whole lot when you break it down. If it helps to bring a jobs announcement to New Ross I’d be supportive of it. An awful lot of people won’t be able to afford it. Low incomes are a big problem, especially down this part of the county where we didn’t see any economic growth.

DREW CHUTE, GOREY

I don’t think it’s fair at all. I don’t think the Government should be coming after home owners again.

PATRICIA COPPOLA, NEW ROSS

It’s necessary and it’s good that they are trying something and a tenner isn’t too much. We need a little bit in New Ross and I like the idea local businessman had of opening all the extra shops.
