ROSSLARE

On Sunday last, the Intermediate Scratch Cup, one of the most popular competitions in the club, was played in Rosslare .

The winner with a 79 was Willie Cuddihy who added this title to the Junior Scratch Cup he won many years ago.

On Sunday, he played a very steady round. He was out in one over par 37 which included a birdie at the 8th. Against a strong wind he held it together on the way home for a 42 and a one-shot win over Martin Whelan. Martin turned in 42. He had birdies at the 15th and 16th but a double bogey at the 18th cost him outright.

The nett prize was won by Michael O’Brien (12) with a 69 one shot ahead of Don Arthur (12)

Conor Brett (12) had birdies at the 5th and 13th in halves of 21pts to win the Open Singles on Wednesday. Second on 41 points was Michael Fitzgerald (16) with Colm Callery (7) third on 40 points.

Sat. 4 Ball – 1st: Stan Jackson (13), Colman Doyle (19); 2nd: Derek Evans (10), Boyd Scott (15).

NEW Ross

One of the major competitions, the Club Cup, an event kindly sponsored by Seamus McGuiness of Prim-Ed saw a big turn-out of players all eager to get their hands on this coveted piece of silverware. Some fine scores were returned for the 36 holes played and players who had a good first 18 failed to capitalise on their good start.

Returning a fine 36-hole total of 137, was Ger Ronan (5) to emerge as clear winner from the chasing bunch. They were headed by Colm Kehoe (11) who finished runner-up by virtue of a better second 18 and also a better back nine with a nett 139. Third place went to the evergreen Brian Dolan (23) who showed the younger brigade how ‘tis done by shooting 139 also.

The Gross went to Michael Ryan (junior) with 137 whilst Category 1 with 142 went to Tommy Liston (8) Category 2 was won by Leo Carroll (11) 139 and Category 3 went to Tom Duggan (14) with a 144.

The prize for best score on the first 18 was won by Martin Carroll (15) shooting a nett 70 and the second 18 prize went to John Howlin (11) also on 70 holding on courtesy of a better back nine.

There are still a goodly number taking part in the Tuesday Evening Fourball and some fine scores are being returned notwithstanding the changed conditions of Autumn temperatures. The latest winners were the two Tommy’s, Liston (8) and Ryan (15) scoring 35 points, the pair claiming first prize courtesy of a better score over the last nine holes. On the same score (35 points) and in second place were Ted Harrington (11) and Liam Wall (14) whilst Hughie O Connor (18) and Dan Quigley (20) finished third with 34 points.

The next Tuesday evening competition is on the 19th of September as the course is closed for coring and sanding this week.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

In trying conditions last Thursday, we ran our stableford team competition with 14 teams taking part.

Even though the day was dry it was typically Autumn with little or no run on the ball. Consequently, scores were hard to come by and no team broke the 90 points target mark.

Nevertheless, it took a count back over the last nine holes before we could find the winners. Taking the honours with a score of 88 points (43 on the back nine), were Hughie O Connor (18), Willie Whitty (18), Sean O hUginn (20) and Martin Burke (26).

Beaten into second place also with 88 points but only 39 points on the inward nine came Willie Byrne (15), Patsy Farrell (16), Martin Hartley (22) and Tom Kent (26).

A three-person team composed of John Browne (12), Donie Cody (23) and Tom Furlong (26) clocked up 85 points (79+6) to claim third spot.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Jim “Ross” Ryan on the 9th Hole and Tony Harford on the 11th.

We have no game for the next two weeks; the course is closed this week commencing September 11 and then on Thursday the 21st the Club Open Three Person Scramble takes place.

Next home outing is Thursday, September 28, with our final away outing of the season in Faithlegg on October 17.

ROSSLARE LADIES

Last Tuesday was a V-Par competition. V-par is not an easy golf competition. To quote our Lady-Captain, “You must go for it”. Either you get your par...sink or swim...if you don’t it is on to the next hole. No putting practice even if it all goes askew. Into a bunker and hard to get that much desired +. So well done to those in the prizes. First was Catherine Haugh, who has been having a great year since her retirement.

The other big event this week was the Pro-am held over the week-end. 33 ladies played on 48 teams. There was a shotgun start at 8.30am and 2.15pm. Mairead Lynch, Delores Hayes and Maureen Mason won the ladies team prize.

It was all a great success and the weather held up too. €3,100 was raised for each of the two charities - St Patrick’s Special Needs School (new school project) and Wexford Hospice Homecare.

Our tournament director, Vandra Deacon worked tirelessly so that everything worked efficiently on the day. Many thanks to her, Bill Kelly and Pauline Power of Kelly’s Resort Hotel, our Pro Jamie O’Sullivan, Sponsors, club staff, volunteers and all those involved.

We would like to say a big thank you to our out-going Junior Lady-Captain Emma Fenlon and welcome our new Junior Lady-Captain Mary Kate Donohoe. We wish Mary Kate Donohoe, Ella Conroy and Anna Ryan all the best after qualifying for The Mid-Leinster Girls Masterclass 2017 in the Heritage Golf Club on September 16.
