Driver banned for 10 years behind wheel of van

Eduards Zavadskis (38) of Ballylucas, Ballymurn was found at the wheel of a Mercedes Sprinter van, despite having been banned for driving for 10 years.

The Latvian man was stopped by Garda Kevin Burke at midnight on February 29 last year with no possibilit­y of valid insurance being in place as he will not be eligible to hold a licence until the year 2022.

Wexford Court was told that Zavadskis had agreed to carry out a delivery run for a sick friend when he defied the ban imposed for a drink drive offence.

The defendant was a divorced father of three, one of them with a new partner, the judge learned.

At the time of the offence, he was unemployed and hungry but he now had a job earning €350 per week.

Judge Gerard Haughton indicated that the court intended to impose a community service in lieu of four months imprisonme­nt before adjourning for a probation report. of his actions, imposing a five month sentence to date from September 1.

The convicted man was ushered by gardaí from the courtroom shouting: ‘I’ve done nothing to that woman.’ tlebridge was at the wheel of a silver Ford Focus when she was involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming BMW in October of last year.

Defending solicitor Dermot Davis appeared for the lone parent defendant and he told Judge Gerard Haughton that, though his client had collected the money to pay for cover, she had had not taken out the insurance.

Her recently acquired second hand purchase was scrapped as a result of the accident, Mr Davis added before Ms Hunt was fined a total of €500, for careless driving and motor insurance offences.

She was also put off the road for two years.
