- By BRENDAN KEANE

COMMUNITIES AROUND the County Wexford coastline are to benefit from funding of €228,750 as part of an overall Government Capital Investment Programme totalling €2.2m.

Wexford County Council is one of 13 local authorities being given funding to carry out harbour project work.

Support of €45,000 is to be provided for repairs to masonry work at the pier in Fethard Harbour while access improvements in Duncannon are to receive €18,750.

The biggest investment will take place in Courtown Harbour where €60,000 will be used to provide power and water in addition to improving lighting at the harbour and an additional €56,250 is to be used to carry out work to fenders at the narrow harbour entrance.

Around €18,750 is to be invested in upgrading electrical bollards at Kilmore Quay Marina while a further €30,000 is to be invested in upgrading the harbour lighting - including high mast lighting.

In announcing the funding stream last week Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, T.D, said 52 local authority harbour projects will benefit from the financial support.

Min Creed said the money will be used to provide funding for maintenance and repair work as well as supporting the ongoing development and enhancement of harbour facilities.

Under the 2018 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme the Government co-funds up to 75 per cent of the total costs of approved capital projects with the local authority providing the balance.
