REVENUE officers seized smuggled cigarettes and tobacco when they searched a car in Rosslare Europort last weekend. The car was stopped and searched after it disembarked off a ferry from Roscoff in France last Saturday.

The cigarettes, branded ‘L&M Blue’, ‘Marlboro’ and ‘Benson & Hedges’ and ‘Golden Virgina’ tobacco, have a retail value of €1,300, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €1,000.

Investigations are ongoing with a view to bringing a prosecution. The seizure forms part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the illegal importation and sale of alcohol and tobacco products in the shadow economy.
