Glory for Rory with sports writ­ing award

A TRAN­SI­TION Year stu­dent from Bridgetown Vo­ca­tional Col­lege scooped first prize in the sports cateogry of the na­tional Press Pass com­pe­ti­tion, for his in­ter­view with for­mer pro­fes­sional soc­cer player Kevin Kil­bane.

Rory Cas­sidy was one of 10,000 entrants to the com­pe­ti­tion which is an ed­u­ca­tional ini­tia­tive by NewsBrands Ire­land. This is the sixth year of the com­pe­ti­tion which sees stu­dents study and an­a­lyse five cat­e­gories of news re­port­ing: news, fea­tures, com­ment, photo jour­nal­ism, and sport.

Out of the thou­sands of en­tries, the panel of judges choose one win­ning en­try and two run­ners-up in each sec­tion.

The judges were im­pressed with Rory’s in­ter­view with the for­mer Ir­ish in­ter­na­tional and the an­gle it took, fo­cus­ing on Kil­bane’s pride in his Ir­ish her­itage.
