Glory for Rory with sports writing award
A TRANSITION Year student from Bridgetown Vocational College scooped first prize in the sports cateogry of the national Press Pass competition, for his interview with former professional soccer player Kevin Kilbane.
Rory Cassidy was one of 10,000 entrants to the competition which is an educational initiative by NewsBrands Ireland. This is the sixth year of the competition which sees students study and analyse five categories of news reporting: news, features, comment, photo journalism, and sport.
Out of the thousands of entries, the panel of judges choose one winning entry and two runners-up in each section.
The judges were impressed with Rory’s interview with the former Irish international and the angle it took, focusing on Kilbane’s pride in his Irish heritage.
