The holiday weekend was a great success in Rosslare, with the three competitio­ns attracting big numbers all delighted to play in good weather conditions.

On Sunday the singles, as it has been for many years, was sponsored by Kelly’s Resort Hotel and the winner was Seamus Cullimore (18) who is making big strides in the past couple of years.

He had a great first nine of 24 points which included five pars and on the way home added 19 points for a clearcut three-point win over Syl Farrell (14) who had halves of 20.

Third, also on 40, was Derek Wickham (7). Gary Collins (+3) won the gross with 34 points which included an eagle three at the third.

Davy Noonan (9) won the vets. with 36 points. Fourth was Adrian Ryan (11) on 39 points, and Charlie O’Gorman (13) was fifth on 38 points. Bill Kelly presented the prizes.

The Barton Cup team, after their great win in the first round, went down to New Ross in the second.

The team was Kevin Foran and P.J. Doyle, John and Mark O’Connor, Dermot Walsh and Michael Kearns, Ciarán Cuddihy and Mark Fitzpatric­k, Ken Maher and Rory Deane.

John Brady finished 37th in the Lytham Trophy last week. With rounds of 68 and 74 he was in ninth position at the halfway stage, but a poor final round of 79 was costly. He was the second-placed Irishman in the field.

The Ladies Into Golf group had a wonderful evening on Tuesday playing on the Burrow course, with some lovely beginner golfers demonstrat­ing their skills. There’s two more weeks to enjoy!

WEXFORD

Last weekend Wexford hosted the Pierce Purcell regional qualifiers. A very busy weekend of golf, played in good weather with the course in excellent condition, saw Wexford qualify for the final against New Ross.

Wexford beat New Ross by three and a half to one and a half matches in the final. Well done to team managers Franny Thomas and Brian Morris and the team consisting of Larry Gainfort, Mick Rossiter, Seán Hurley, Mick Fortune, Seán Farrell, Mick Leniston, Ian Nolan, Andrew Rynhart, Richie ‘Dougal’ Browne and the evergreen Ted Hynes.

Our Provincial Towns Cup team members were unlucky to be beaten on the 18th hole in Courtown. The team was Liam Sinnott, Paul Hynes, Damien O’Reilly, David Durack, Tommy Morrissey, Colin Edwards, Neil B. Murphy, Maurice Delaney and Nicky Murphy.

Congratula­tions to Mary Cashe who won the club Captain’s prize to the ladies on Sunday.

Last Tuesday’s winner of the Seniors’ competitio­n was modest Pat Furlong, with Lar Kenny in second place and third place going to Tom O’Sullivan.

There are still a few places available for the Seniors’ outing at the end of the month to Woodenbrid­ge. If interested please contact Jimmy Thomas.

The May bank holiday competitio­n was a four-person team event and was won by Martin Frehill, John S. Nolan, David Byrne and Nigel Morrissey with 90 points. Second place went to Roy Sexton, Seamus Walsh, Chris Grant and Tommy Morrissey on 85 points.

Wednesday’s 14-hole fourball was won by Pat Murphy and John B. O’Connor with 34 points.

Friday was the first of our new nine-hole competitio­ns and was won by Michael Swan with 23 points.

The latest Joker draw winner was Brendan MacCarry.

NEW ROSS

New Ross had a great win in the Barton Cup, beating Rosslare on the score of 4/1. They will be playing Courtown next in another away tie. Courtown had a surprise win over Enniscorth­y who were the holders of the Cup. Congratula­tions to both team and mentors.

NEW ROSS LADIES

Australian spoons (qualifier), 18-hole stableford foursomes, sponsored by Brandon House Hotel: 1, Ger Mackey (12) and Teresa Byrne (20), 35 points (last nine); 2, Carmel Fenlon (22) and Anne Fenlon (26), 35 points; gross, Margaret Furlong and Teresa Foley, 20 points.

A reminder that booking is now available online for our lady Captain Maeve’s charity day and pink day in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute which will be held on May 30. It is an open fourball for men and women.

Each competitio­n runs separately on the day. The country’s 20 best nett and six best gross women’s scores will qualify for the national finals in Glasson in September.

We plan to have a fun and social day, running a putting competitio­n and a raffle. We are asking all members if they could bring in something to contribute to the raffle and leave it behind the bar or in the office, it would be greatly appreciate­d.

Our teams are now in full swing. Congratula­tions to the Intermedia­te team which beat Wicklow in Courtown, managed by our lady President, Liz, who also celebrated her birthday on the day. Happy birthday lady President.

Our nine-hole mixed competitio­n on Friday, May 4, was a great success. Thirty-two pairs played and everyone enjoyed a chat afterwards in the bar.

It was the first day out on the fairways after injury for our lady President, Liz, who played a blinder partnered with our Captain, Martin, to win first prize. Well done.

THE GATE SOCIETY

The Gate Golf Society held its second outing of 2018 on Saturday at New Ross Golf Club.

We were playing for the Jim O’Neill Perpetual Cup. The sponsors were the O’Neill family to whom we are very grateful. We want to thank New Ross Golf Club for all their help.

The competitio­n on Tuesday got off to a damp start, but as the day progressed the sun came out to give a pleasant day for golf. The day was sponsored by Bourke’s Jewellers and was the first stroke competitio­n of the season.

COURTOWN LADIES

Tuesday, May 1, arrived and once again the weather was unkind to say the least. Despite the inclement weather, our brave ladies headed out determined to play golf.

There were only 16 holes in play and the layout of the course was in criss-cross fashion. The competitio­n was sponsored by McCabe’s Pharmacy, and the prize table looked fantastic.

Results: 1, Angela Merrigan (26), 32 points; 2, Catherine Quinn (18), 29 points; 3, Eileen O’Brien (20), 28 points (countback).

The nine-hole competitio­n was won by Elaine Fitzgerald (34) with 24 points.

Saturday, May 5, brought a ladies’ and gents’ singles competitio­n and much, much better weather.

Results: 1, Mairéad Sunderland (20), 36 points; 2, Maeve Duke (30), 34 points.

Congratula­tions to all our winners.

Our Minor Cup team, managed by Eileen Cullen, went to Bunclody to play Kilkenny in the championsh­ip. A tough, tight set of matches progressed over the afternoon and, despite a strong comeback in the last matches, Kilkenny emerged with the victory. Well done to manager, players and caddies.

The weather being rather unkind in the earlier part of the season has left us with the problem of having to re-schedule a couple of competitio­ns.

Dates have now been allocated for these: Pettitt’s SuperValu has been re-scheduled for Thursday, May 24; Lloyd’s Pharmacy and the Australian Spoons foursomes qualifier has been re-scheduled for Monday, May 28.

Tuesday, May 8, was the first ladies’ open day of the summer. The day started off a tad wet but as it progressed into the afternoon the sun shone and some lovely summer-like weather greeted us as we made our way around the course.

The format was fourball better ball and it was great to see the big entry. O’Connor Nurseries was the sponsor and yet again Jim and Helen O’Connor did a spectacula­r job in presenting the prizes.

The clubhouse was awash with potted flowers, hanging baskets and heaps of pickie outs. The ladies of Courtown are indebted to O’Connor Nurseries for their continued support.

Results: 1, Denise Kavanagh (12) and Mairéad Carty (20), 47 points; 2, Maeve Duke (30) and Croine Ferguson (31), 45 points; gross, Sarah Donnellan (7) and Mary Osborne (19), 43 points; 3, Janice McDonald (28) and Jackie Hamilton (35), 45 points (countback); 4, Mary O’Connor (36) and Elaine Fitzgerald (34), 44 points.

The nine-hole competitio­n was won by Brigid O’Brien (35) with 20 points, and second was Margaret Horgan (36) with 15 points. Congratula­tions to all our winners.

On Monday, May 7, Mary Osborne brought the Challenge Cup team to play Tara Glen in Arklow in the next round of the championsh­ip.

A very tight match developed throughout the afternoon, with Courtown emerging with a victory. Congratula­tions to the manager and players.

DONOHOE’S SOCIETY

Donohoe’s Society played and stayed at Ballykiste­en Hotel in Tipperary for our annual bank holiday weekend away, with great weather thrown in for good measure and plenty of beer and craic.

Results: first day winner, Andrew Holden; first overall, Cliff Weeber, 67 points; second, Andrew Holden, 60 points; third, Ted Morrissey, 58 points; fourth, Jim Breen, 57 points.

Paul Breen won the longest drive and John Sullivan won nearest the pin. Trevor Murphy and Martin Collins won the birdie money.

Martin Collins and Charlie O’Brien shared the player of the month award for April with joint scores of 124.

On Sunday morning we played Rathaspeck Manor again with great weather, and 19 players in total.

Results: 1, Jim Breen, 37 points; 2, Willie Nolan, 34 points; 3, Joe Byrne, 34 points. Lar Morrissey won the birdie money.

Next Sunday we play Blackwater, with the yellow ball competitio­n taking place. Please be there by 8.45 a.m.
