Vibrant escapades at school’s colour run

- By ANNA HAYES

RUNNERS, JOGGERS and walkers took to the track at Wexford Racecourse on a gloriously sunny Sunday morning recently, to enjoy a colour run, organised by the transition year students of Loreto Secondary School.

More than 400 people donned white and embraced the infectious fun of the morning, dousing each other in coloured chalk and snapping colourful selfies ahead of the starting buzzer. This is the first time the school has organised an event of this kind and many are hopeful that it will become a permanent fixture on the school calendar.

Organised by the fourth year students of the school, under the watchful eye of teacher Ruth Kennedy, the group also engaged with Parkrun coordinator John Dier and main sponsors SK Fitness to host the hugely successful event. While money is still coming in from various sponsors and supporters, so far over €5,000 has been raised from the event.

The run was part of a series of events organised by the students this year with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House in Crumlin Children’s Hospital, where fundraising is ongoing for a new facility, and the MRI Now campaign at Wexford General Hospital, which aims to raise €250,000 for the vital piece of equipment. The group has already held a first year charity walk, a Junk Kouture show, and cake sales and have organised an upcoming table quiz, church gate collection, and charity swim for transition years at the Raven at the end of the year.

Ms Kennedy said they were extremely grateful to all of their sponsors and supporters who had assisted in the running of the event, as well as expressing gratitude to the school staff, parents and the wider community, including Wexford Racecourse for their support.

She said: ‘People came together and helped us out between sponsorship and donations and it made for a great family day that everyone could take part in. We are hoping that the colour run will become an annual event.’
