Gary Fur­long finds his voice

THE WEX­FORD voice ac­tor Gary Fur­long has won a pres­ti­gious Au­dio­book Award which was de­cided on by au­di­book lis­ten­ers in a world­wide vote.

‘As You Wish’, a ro­mance thriller by Iso­bel Star­ling, nar­rated by Gary, pic­tured right, was one of five fi­nal­ists in the fiercely com­pet­i­tive ro­mance cat­e­gory. The award win­ners were an­nounced re­cently at the Hear Now Fes­ti­val in Kansas and ‘As You Wish’ won the Ro­mance Award.

Gary grew up in Wex­ford and has worked as a teacher in Ja­pan, a pup­peteer in Prague, an im­prov artist in Mem­phis, Ten­nessee and as a singer and ac­tor all over Ire­land. He be­gan nar­rat­ing au­dio­books in late 2015 and hasn’t looked back since.

Hav­ing made his de­but in the mu­si­cal God­spell as a stu­dent in St. Peter’s Col­lege, he pur­sued act­ing on the am­a­teur and pro­fes­sional cir­cuit. He played Tom Collins in Wex­ford the­atre com­pany Bare Cheek’s pro­duc­tion of Rent in 2010 and was a mem­ber of the Wex­ford com­edy group Tam­ing of the Crewm, ap­pear­ing in Hell­bound,Santa Claus Ver­sus the Mar­tians and Lost and Found.

Dur­ing five years in Ja­pan, he was an ac­tor, di­rec­tor and au­dio pro­ducer and dis­cov­ered his in­ter­est in au­dio­books and voice over. He now works full-time as an au­dio book nar­ra­tor and voice ac­tor. He has recorded al­most 50 au­dio­books and has worked with many top pub­lish­ers in the in­dus­try in­clud­ing Tan­tor, Harper­Collins, Audi­ble Stu­dios, Har­le­quin Au­dio and Si­mon and Schus­ter.He cur­rently lives in Den­ton, Texas.

He speaks Ja­panese and Irish and his list of ac­com­plished ac­cents in­cludes Cork Done­gal, Dublin, French, Scot­tish, Cock­ney, North­ern Work­ing Class, West Coun­try, Aus­tralian, Ger­man, Span­ish, Ja­panese, Scan­dana­vian, In­dian, Rus­sian, South­ern Amer­i­can, Stan­dard Amer­i­can and Ser­bian.
