Tagoat Foróige Club awarded €2,000 for promotion of health and wellbeing

-

Tagoat Foroige Youth Club and Gorey Youth Needs Group have received €2,000 each in funding from the Applegreen Blossom Fund, a partnership between Applegreen and the Irish Youth Foundation.

The Wexford groups are two of 62 community and voluntary youth projects across Ireland which were chosen from over 300 applicants to receive funding.

The fund invited applications from projects working with children and young people aged between six and 12 living in disadvantaged circumstances under the theme of health and well being.

Tagoat Foroige Youth Club is setting up a project called ‘Yola Farm Wildlife Garden’. The project has two parts – a gardening plot and a wildlife garden. There is a strong element of learning about nature, and the positive effect this has on a child’s mental well being. They want to grow several types of fruit and vegetables, which they intend for the children to eventually cook and eat.,

There is an educational side to this, as they want to teach the children about the different plants and how these benefit the local wildlife and the environment in general. The idea of the project is to allow children to see the progression of what they are growing and for them to gain an interest in eating home-grown products.

Gorey Youth Needs will put the €2,000 towards their fifth and sixth class afterschool club. The major focus of this project is to teach children how to make their own informed decisions about leading a healthy lifestyle. Particularly during the winter months, they educate children about all the different factors of healthy eating, especially preparing and cooking their own meals.

In the summer time, there is more of a focus on sports and outdoor activities.
