‘Urgent need’ for dual carriageway from Oylegate to Europort

- By MARIA PEPPER

FIANNA Fail councillor Lisa McDonald has called for urgent action on the construction of a dual carriageway from Oylegate to Rosslare Harbour now that the Gorey to Enniscorthy bypass road is ready to open in the coming weeks.

Welcoming an end in sight to the major traffic bottleneck in Enniscorthy with the bypass taking heavy trucks off the streets of the town, Cllr. McDonald called on the Government to provide funding now for the N11/N25 Oylegate to Rosslare Harbour project which was first proposed in 2009 with a public display of the preferred route held in July 2011.

Wexford County Council has applied to the National Roads Authority for funding to progress the road to the design stage.

‘There is a plan to to build a new motorway that continues the Enniscorthy bypass to the N25 near Wexford Town and it also includes a new section of the N25 linking up with Rosslare Harbour.

‘The completion of this project would ensure there is no single carriageway remaining on the N11. This would have a massivwe impact for Wexford’, said Cllr. McDonald.

She said the project is ‘stuck in limbo’ and cannot progress to the next stage without funding from the NRA.

‘I am calling on the Government to ensure that this funding is delivered without any unnecessary delay. We need to know for certain that this project will get the go ahead’.

Cllr. McDonald said she believes the motorway is of national importance considering its impact on Rosslare Harbour.

‘Brexit is only around the corner and the Government has been warned that Rosslare Harbour is vital in ensuring Ireland remains connected to our European partners.’

‘Everything must be done to protect and enhance the services offered by Rosslare’, said the councillor, outlining her intention to table a motion on the issue at the September meeting of Wexford County Council.
