Cloughbawn show their class

Commanding victory despite Glynn-Barntown’s efforts

- BRIAN CARTY

CLOUGHBAWN 4-9 GLYNN-BARNTOWN 0-4

CLOUGHBAWN PUT in a masterly display when claiming the Under-14 camogie Premier championship title with a commanding 4-9 to 0-4 victory over Glynn-Barntown in the final played in front of a large crowd at a sunny Boolabawn.

Spectators were out in force to witness the two best sides in this division battle it out tooth and nail for the coveted trophy, and ultimately it was the greater firepower of the Castleboro girls that allowed them to clinch victory.

That said, they were slow to find their attacking groove as both set of defences were on top in the early exchanges, with Gia Coyne a class operator in the corner for Glynn-Barntown, and Ellen Gill prominent at the other end.

Rebecca Ogilvie (free) and Ciara Butler had swapped early placed balls before Cloughbawn raised their first green flag when Caoimhe Curtis kept play alive and Niamh English lashed to the net with Niamh Bates in close proximity.

The gods were unkind to Glynn-Barntown two minutes later though as Leah Furlong’s attempt at the posts dipped into the net as the gap grew to 2-1 to 0-1.

Ogilvie (twice) and Ellie Kehoe provided the next three Cloughbawn points before Curtis fired low to the net to increase their advantage to 3-4 to 0-2 at the change of ends.

In fairness to Glynn-Barntown, they never gave up. They wouldn’t have even got to the final in the first place if they didn’t show fighting spirit along the way, but they just found the Cloughbawn rearguard in a particularly unforgiving mood.

Butler carried the scoring threat with two more successful frees on the resumption, but the goal they needed never materialised.

Instead, Cloughbawn picked off 1-5 before the end, with Ogilvie’s rocket from mid-range flying all the way to the net to secure the honours.

Incidentally, victory here represents

tangible progress for the club as they were crowned Under-14 Roinn 1A champions in 2016.
