NEW ROSS SENIORS

What better way to enjoy a game of golf than something featuring great scoring, great camaraderie, and a beautiful golf course on which to do it?

That was the story from our final away outing of the season at Dungarvan on Monday of last week. The course was in pristine condition and to quote from a well-known advertisement, ‘probably’ the best course on which we played all year.

The scoring reflected the conditions and a change in format where all players took part in the club’s open singles competition and played our own team game as well, with the best three cards counting out of our teams of four.

Keeping up his rich vein of form, the recent winner of Harry Rheinhart’s President’s prize, Tommy Liston, led his team to victory with a cracking final total of 112 points.

Backed up by Frank Boyle, Francis Coghlan and Seamus McLaurence, they had five points to spare over their nearest challengers.

On 107 points and placed second were Tommy Ryan, Kenny Irwin, Aidan Kent (the comeback kid) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan.

Third spot went to Denis Kirwan, Billy Redmond, Larry Shannon and Jamesie Murphy with 104 points.

The 101 points scored by John Browne, Michael Brennan, Tom Kent and Aidan Wallace proved good enough to claim fourth prize, whilst John Kennedy, Michael Gannon, John Joe Murray and Donie Cody finished fifth with 100 points.

Many thanks go to Irene Lynch in Dungarvan Golf Club for facilitating us by giving us a block booking on the timesheet which was very much appreciated by our travelling contingent.

Back on home turf on Thursday, twelve teams were out on a dry but breezy day which kept the overall scores down somewhat.

A change of format to a champagne scramble waltz was the main reason for this, producing low scores well below the normal for our Seniors. Added to that, some teams did not get the gist of the waltz, leading to confusion in compiling the scores, so the motto in future should be - keep it simple.

The team of Tony Harford, Michael Kavanagh, Liam Glasheen and Richie Byrne emerged victorious with a final total of 89 points by virtue of a better last three holes.

Ray Shannon, John Fitzpatrick, John F. Roche and Michael Long finished second with the same total (89 points). On 85 points and in third spot came Johnny Browne, Willie Byrne, Mikey Lee and Tom Kent.

We had excitement too when one of our esteemed members won a nearest the pin prize with a hole-in-one. Congratulations to Willie Byrne who had the rare distinction of shooting that hole-in-one on the ninth hole, and to Willie Whitty who was nearest the pin on the eleventh hole.

PAULINE’S SOCIETY

Our trip to Carrick-on-Suir on August 11 was called off due to the inclement weather, to the disappointment of those planning to travel.

Next on the calendar will be the ever-popular Enniscorthy course on Saturday, September 1. As usual, members and visitors who intend to travel should show their intentions by placing their names on the sheet in Pauline’s Bar before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29.

TAGHMON SOCIETY

The society went to Faithlegg G.C. on July 28 where 52 players endured the searing heat of the current drought conditions, but no fog this time thankfully.

Everyone was full of trepidation and hope in trying to win the big one of the year, Captain Rory Murphy’s prize, and the honours went to my ould Woodenbridge playing partner where he was taught how to play golf by yours truly.

After the game we all headed back to our pub homebase via road and ferry to our kind sponsor for the day, Dolores Sydney of Alice Brady’s pub in Taghmon where we all watched the big hurling match, Galway v. Clare, and traded stories on the day’s incidents.

When that was over, 40 hungry men headed down the street to the Country Bistro, for a sumptuous feed courtesy of Mary McGee in her lovely restaurant, and the prize-giving. Rory’s speech was short and sweet thankfully!

He thanked Dolores, Mary and her staff, Faithlegg G.C. and everyone that turned up for his day. Almost all the committee were thanked for their work during the year in keeping the society vibrant and well run. After that it was back to Brady’s to see the night out. It was a great day out in all.
