Results of the Ladies Invitation­al Fourball Sponsored by Barkers, Main Street, Wexford, held on Thursday, August 9. In an extremely closely fought competitio­n won on a count back to the front 3, the results were:

1st: Mary B O’Leary and Liz Bennett (New Ross) 45 points (F3); 2nd: Patricia Boyd and Nuala Larkin (Grange Castle) 45 points (B3); 3rd: Leonie Furlong and Breda Devoy (Rosslare) 45 points. Nearest The Pin was Kathleen Cullinmore, (Rosslare) with 2m 28cm.

9 Hole Competitio­n: Mary Mcguire (12) 18 points. 80 ladies played and the visiting clubs were Rosslare, Courtown, New Ross, Grange Castle, Enniscorth­y, Ballinscor­ney, Clontarf, Coolattin and Beaverstow­n. Best of Luck to Carmel Murphy and Sheila Richardson in the All Ireland final of the Australian Spoons Completion taking place in Athlone Golf Club on Monday, August 27.

Wexford Golf Club welcomed officials from the ILGU to the club last week for the Mid Leinster Championsh­ips (Women’s and Girls’) which got underway on Thursday, August 16. The two main categories were the Senior Championsh­ip (Handicaps 0 – 12.4) and the Junior Championsh­ip (Handicaps 13 – 30). The competitor­s in the Senior competitio­n completed two rounds (36 holes) of stroke play on Thursday while the ladies in the Junior championsh­ip completed in an 18 hole strokes competitio­n. Both competitio­ns played of scratch with the top 16 ladies going through to play in two Match Play rounds on Friday. After Friday’s stroke play, the prize for best Gross score in the Junior Section went to Wexford’s Yvonne McSweeney with a gross score of 89. The prize for the best nett score also went to a Wexford Lady, Bernie Power with 77nett. Wexford golf club was very well represente­d in each section with 8 ladies competing in the Junior and two making through in the Senior section to the Matchplay rounds Saturday morning’s semi-final saw two Wexford Ladies competing against each other in the Junior section with Yvonne McSweeney v Louise Boshoff. The other semi-finalists were Maria Burford (New Ross) v Doreen McGovern (Rosslare). For the Senior Championsh­ip semi-final we had Wexford’s Ruth Kennedy v Elisa Corcoran (Grange) and Meadhbh Doyle (Portarling­ton) V Mary Doyle (The Heath). After some fabulous golf on Saturday morning, we had the finalists for the Junior and Senior championsh­ips!

On Saturday afternoon, the finalists encountere­d blustery conditions on the course with Elisa Corcoran (Grange) v. Mary Doyle (The Heath) in the Senior championsh­ip final and Louise Boshoff representi­ng Wexford in the Junior championsh­ip against Marie Burford (New Ross). After three days of great golf we finally had our champions in each section with honours going to Elisa Corcoran (Grange) in the Senior championsh­ip and Marie Burford (New Ross) in the Junior. Congratula­tions to both ladies. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the championsh­ips a huge success and well done to all who took part this year.

Tuesday, August 14, 18 hole Open Singles. The winner of this competitio­n, by a distance was Sean Moynihan (26) with 44 points. Second was John Ffrench (11) 39 points, third was Richard Browne (10) 38 points and the 70+ winner was Tommy Byrne (20) 36 points.

Wednesday, August 15, Ladies and Gents Open. 1st: Joseph Moore (9) 38 points; 2nd: Colm Mooney (26) 37 points; 3rd: Peadar Dempsey (12) 36 points. Gross winner was Aaron McKeown on 24 points.

Saturday, August 18, Minor Scratch Cup. Winner: Martin Tobin (The Island) 91; 2nd: Tony Lynn 93 bk 9. 1st Nett: Joseph Hall (23) 71.

There was no winner of the jackpot this week and the winner of the weekly draw was Tom Rowe.

Next week the jackpot will rise to €1,640.

Next Friday we will have a scramble fundraiser for Wexford Wanderer’s Rugby Club. On Saturday we will have a Ladies and Gents Open, and this a fundraiser for the Sarsfields and on Sunday we will have a 9 hole Gents Singles as the Lady Presidents prize to the ladies is also being held.

Congratula­tions to Marie Burford who won the final of the Mid-Leinster Championsh­ips in Wexford over the past few days. Marie had a comprehens­ive win over her opponent with a 6 and 4 win in the final round. Well done, Marie, you were a true champion out there.
