Woodies staff hand over €13,000 to cyclists

-

THE HARD-WORKING staff at Woodies in Wexford Retail Park had cause for celebration on Tuesday last when they presented a cheque for €13,330 to a group of cyclists taking part in a store-to-store cycle around the country.

The store has been fundraising for four charities – Jack and Jill, Make a Wish, Down Syndrome Ireland and Temple Street Hospital – for the last number of months through a variety of in-house events and initiatives. All 35 Woodies stores across the country have taken part in the initiative which has been running for four years.

Team leader Shane Moran said that everyone did their bit for the charity campaign. He explained that they had held two weekends of car washes, carried out by Wexford Fire Brigade whom he expressed huge gratitude to. They also held in-store raffles, staff-only draws, and installed a static bike in the store which, between 30 of them, they racked up 1,440 miles on.

‘I was glad when we finished that one,’ Shane joked, adding that a lot of people had donated to that initiative as they passed by some of the staff tearing up a big hill!

All of the events were coordinated by charity ambassador Jade Murphy, her right-hand woman Sharon King, and store manager Jamie Cooney.

On Tuesday, 15 cyclists, some of them store and area managers with the company, rolled up to the store for refreshments and to collect the cheque. Shane explained that, overall, the Woodies group had collected around €250,000 each year and, in 2018, was hoping to break €1m. He said the final total hadn’t been tallied yet but they were very hopeful of achieving that goal.
