GLYNN-BARNTOWN 2-17 OYLEGATE-G’BRIEN 2-14

GLYNN-BARNTOWN picked up their first win of the campaign after an action-packed game in the Pettitt’s Senior Hurling Championship Group B on Saturday. It was their first half display which won them the game as they were ahead by nine points after playing with a stiff breeze and would hold on in the second period to win by three.

Much to the frustration of the supporters in attendance, both sides lined out in almost identical jerseys, but Glynn-Barntown had no problems finding their men as they had a goal within ten seconds thanks to Michael O’ Regan. It was clear that the Glynn-Barntown were determined to make use of the wind as they were totally dominating in the early exchanges and were ahead 1-6 to 0-4 after fifteen minutes although Mark Fanning had to make a good save to stop a Podge Doran penalty.

Oylegate-Glenbrien were completely reliant on the free-taking of Seamus Casey to keep them in touch and it took a full twenty minutes until the impressive Conor Heffernan got their first score from play. Oylegate-Glenbrien’s joy was short lived however, as Gary Moore rounded off a superb team move to get Glynn-Barntown’s second goal and put them in firm control and they would take a 2-10 to 0-7 lead into the break.

Oylegate-Glenbrien came out a different team in the second half, mainly because they turned their jerseys inside out, and now, playing in white, they began to claw away at the deficit. Scores from Conor Heffernan (2) and Damien Reck reduced the deficit to six.

Podge Doran found the net with ten minutes to go and the game looked in the mix but Oylegate-Glenbrien’s Jame Reck was given a straight-red card for an incident immediately after the goal.

Now with an extra man, Glynn-Barntown used all their experience to stifle their opponents. Gary Moore was unerring from placed balls and even though Seamus Casey found the net with a late free Glynn ran out deserving three-point winners.
