Mick and John win the double
THE finals of the South East Skittle League were played out in Taghmon on Sunday, July 29.
The games were played out in front of the Taghmon-Camross GAA stand.
A large audience of spectators and skittle followers got a perfect view of some thrilling performances from all the teams involved.
First up were the Junior teams of Paul Morrissey’s of Cassagh versus Micko’s A of Taghmon.
Paul Morrissey’s had beaten their next door neighbours Allen Morrissey’s in the semi-final the previous week.
Micko’s A also won against Gusserane in the semi-final. Both teams put on great performances with Paul Morrissey’s team winning in the end.
Micko’s did not give up easy as they took two games which meant six games were played before a winner was declared.
Paul Morrissey’s will now move into Senior competition for next year and if their performance in the final is anything to go by they may cause some upsets in the Senior section.
The Senior clash was also eagerly awaited.
Frank Jordan’s in the semi-final had taken out league top scorers Clonmines. The St. Leonards team easily won the semi-final against the Tallaught team and the scene was now set for two old rivals to peg it out against each other for the eight occasion.
Skittlers and spectators alike expected a change in the road to the final this year as the Clonmines team were top scorers in the league with Tallaught in second place. They both lost out in the semi-final, Clonmines to Frank Jordans and Tallaught to St. Leonards.
The doubles were the first to be played in the Senior game with John Mackey and Michael Murphy first for St. Leonards against John Fardy and Michael Carty for the Rathangan team.
This game ended with a comfortable win for St Leonards. Next up was the second doubles, this time it was Tolic Tol and Bill Redmond for Rathangan against Michael Walsh and Francis Stafford for St. Leonards. Again St. Leonards ended the game ahead of their rivals.
It now looked as St. Leonards were heading for four in a row as two more wins would make them champions, however Rathangan had not given up yet.
Mick Carty led his team in the team games with a huge score of 25 followed by John Fardy on 24, the other two players put up creditable scores.
The game ended in seven throws in favour of Rathangan.
The next three games went the same way with St. Leonards struggling to put up big scores and the tip causing them big trouble. It was Rathangan’s day. .
The Frank Jordan’s team from Rathangan makes it even with St Leonards skittle team by taking the honours in this year’s final. Both teams have dominated the league over the last eight years and now hold four titles each.
The celebrations were held in Micko’s pub, Taghmon. Music was provided by Johnny Ge Whiz.
The winners and runners-up were presented with their well deserved prizes. It was celebrations on the double for team captain of Frank Jordan’s, Mick Carty. Mick had clinched yet another Skittler of the Year contest in the previous weeks.
John Power from the winning Paul Morrissey’s team also had good reason to celebrate as he won his way to become the new Junior Skittler of the Year title.
A most exciting and enjoyable season have now come to an end for another year.
