SENIOR ATHLETICS

Well done to St Killian’s senior athlete Niall Sheil, who was in Tullamore on Sunday week last competing in the National Masters Track and Field Championships. Conditions were hot and humid which made the 12.5 laps, 5k race even tougher than normal. In a very competitive race Niall had to dig deep to come back with a bronze medal. He had a great last lap, closing hard on the silver position but just ran out of track missing the silver by one second. Well done to coach Pavel, who has always been in his corner and to training partner Jackie Carthy, who had a super race to take gold in the 3k. Brian O’Shaughnessy had a great race in the Slaney Olympic Athletic Club summer series held in Ballindaggin. In a notoriously challenging 6km course over a very scenic course, Brian had a great win in a time of 22min 15 seconds from Ben Hill in second place. Well done to Niall and Brian in doing themselves and the club proud.

BACK IN TRAINING

St Killian’s AC juvenile members will re-commence training at the community field in Crossabeg on Monday, September 3, from 7 p.m. to 8.15 p.m. New members are most welcome but boys and girls must be aged seven years and upwards to join. The training sessions will take place every Monday and Thursday evening.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Over the weekend of August 18 and 19, a number of young competitors from the local Community Games Area were in action on the athletic track at the university of Limerick, competing in the national finals. These young people earned the right to be there, having won their respective events at the county finals held back in June. Standards were extremely high in most events and medals hard earned. County Wexford children competed with the best and although the county did not take home as many medals as in previous years, they still had a fair amount of silverware going home. We salute them all.

For the local area, they took home a silver medal and two Medallions for fourth place, and others made it all the way to the finals. Jack Forde (Crossabeg) was competing in the High Jump and having scaled 1.86 along with Iarlaith Golding from Mayo, the bar went up to 1.90 and here Jack had to bow out, with Iarlaith clearing same. A very good silver medal for Jack.

Seán Rowley (Oylegate) competed in the under-14 Hurdles and qualified in second place in the heat and semi-final and finished up with the Medallion for fourth place in the final. Ethan Jarvis (Crossabeg) qualified in second place in the heat of the 60m under-eight and first in his semi-final. He gave it his all in the final and came home with the Medallion for finishing fourth in the final. First time for Ethan to compete at this level. We hope to see plenty more from him in the future.

Niamh O’Connor (Screen) was our competitor in the 100m under-10 (a first for Niamh at this level too) and in her heat qualified in third place and in fifth in the semi-finals. Well done, Niamh.

Shane Doran (Edermine) qualified in second place in his heat in the 100m under-14, fourth place in the semi-final and outside of the medal placings in the final. Billy Reck (Crossabeg) was our qualifier in the under-16 Discus. He made it to the last eight but finished outside of the medals.

The boys under-14 Relay team of Seán Rowley, Shane Doran, Seán Milbourne (all Oylegate Area) together with Conor Wycherley from Crossabeg were also in action. They qualified in second place in their heat, third in the semi-final and sixth place in the final. Great performances all round. Well done, everyone.
