Doc­u­men­tary film fes­ti­val boasts a stel­lar line-up

THE SIXTH an­nual Wex­ford Doc­u­men­tary Film Fes­ti­val takes place from Septem­ber 21 to 23 at the Stella Maris Cen­tre in Kil­more Quay.

The three-day fes­ti­val fea­tures a host of in­ter­na­tional, na­tional and lo­cal films. In keep­ing with the fes­ti­val ethos, the se­lected films pow­er­fully ex­plore so­cial, po­lit­i­cal, and en­vi­ron­men­tal con­cerns. There will be post-screen­ing Q&A ses­sions with in­ter­na­tional di­rec­tors, de­bates, and film work­shops.

The fes­ti­val’s three-minute film chal­lenge has proved a huge suc­cess with over 3,000 en­tries from 40 coun­tries.

The fes­ti­val opens on Fri­day, Septem­ber 21 at 7 p.m. with a screen­ing of ‘An­other News Story’, a film chart­ing the jour­ney of refugees across Europe, open­ing on Les­bos is­land in Greece. The film fo­cuses both on the refugees’ jour­ney, and the 24-hour news gath­er­ers in pur­suit of a break­ing story. This will be fol­lowed by a dis­cus­sion with di­rec­tor Or­ban Wal­lace, Vukasin Nedeljkovic, cre­ator of The Asy­lum Ar­chives, and Dr Harry Browne, se­nior me­dia lec­turer in DIT.

Through­out the week­end, there will be some­thing for every­one, in­clud­ing the kids as Satur­day morn­ing, from 11 a.m. is ded­i­cated to younger mem­bers of the au­di­ence.

Other films show­ing in­clude: ‘Berlin Rebel High School’ which will have its Ir­ish pre­mière, ‘Free­dom for the Wolf ’, ‘Golden Dawn, A Per­sonal Af­fair’, ‘Marie-Made­line: A Fe­male Chief ’, ‘Be­tween a Rock and a Wave’ (Ir­ish Pre­miere), ‘Gayby Baby’, ‘At the Philoso­pher’s School’,’Vel­vet Rev­o­lu­tion’, and ‘Tick­ling Gi­ants’.

There will be out­reach events in St Michael’s The­atre on Septem­ber 19 with the screen­ing of ‘They Call Us War­riors’ at 8 p.m., a day of film at the Art Stu­dio in Yola Hedge School on Septem­ber 15, and a screen­ing of short films on Cul­ture Night (Septem­ber 21) in the Bull­ring Mall at 8 p.m.

Wex­ford based film­mak­ers will also fea­ture in­clud­ing: Els Di­etvorst and Ter­ence White whose of­fer­ings ‘I Watched the White Dogs of the Dawn’ and ‘Heal­ing Shores’ make up the ‘Made in Kil­more Quay’ event on Sun­day at 6 p.m. Also fea­tur­ing are Philip Cullen, De­clan Cody, Do­minic Palmer, and Marja van Kam­pen, among oth­ers.
