Joe’s memory to live on through new Premier Minor football cup
FITTING TRIBUTE was paid to a GAA legend when a cup, named in his memory, was presented to Wexford GAA for use as the new Premier Minor Football trophy.
At an event in Sinnott’s Bar in Bishopswater, the Joe Brennan Memorial Cup was presented, by the Brennan family, to Angela McCormack from Wexford County Board, in front of a crowd of more than 100 people including past and present members of Clonard GAA Club. Numerous anecdotes were shared by those present, including Derek Kent who played for Clonard for a short time.
On what was essentially a night of celebration, Joe’s daughter Linda wrote a lovely piece for the programme, recalling many stories over the years that showed his complete commitment to the development of Wexford GAA and, in particular, Clonard GAA, over the past 40 years. She also read a touching letter from Joe’s son, Fr Tommy Brennan, who is now based in America.
Wexford county footballer Ciaran Lyng, who began his playing days with Clonard, being trained by Joe, read a poem titled ‘Joe’ which was written by Jack Matthews and which encapsulated Joe’s first passion, developing underage footballers.
Joe, who passed away in 2016, was a true legend of Wexford GAA with strong connections to the Blues and Whites and the Sarsfields, before being instrumental in the foundation of Clonard GAA in the early 1980s. Joe was remembered for his dedication to Clonard Parish, GAA and gaelic football, as well as for his booming voice ringing out across the many pitches of County Wexford. He was keen follower of all things gaelic - the language, music, culture and sport.
The trophy ensures that his memory will live on for many years to come.
