A weighty issue that’s not rubbish
A motion calling on the Minister for the Communications, Climate Action and Environment to conduct a fundamental review of the Pay by Weight Regulations was fully supported. Cllr Michael Sheehan made the call ‘to ensure fairness and transparency for consumers’ ‘While this review is conducted, the mandatory introduction is postponed and more options including the returning the service under the Local Authorities is considered,’ the motion read. He said several councillors, including himself, have been contacted by people who have been quoted extortionate rates for their pay-by-weight refuse collection. ‘People are being put to the pin of their collar buy this regime.’ Cllr David Hynes warned that the system will lead to more dumping, while Cllr Willie Fitzharris said the weight should be applied on an annual basis.
