Autumn is the time for necessary DIY

-

I DON’T care what anyone says but autumn is the best time of year for doing all those niggly, needy and necessary DIY jobs around the home and garden and if you’re about to jump in with an objection, hear me out. First off, summer is a time of year for spending in the great outdoors and no matter how many times we promised ourselves to paint that room or renovate the attic, temptations of holidays and warm weather are simply too much to overcome.

Secondly, winter is a solitary time when most of us prefer to retreat to the comforts of a home already at ease with itself, certainly where DIY jobs are concerned. Only late spring comes anywhere close to matching autumn as a good time of year for DIY, I grant you that, but autumn is still the best. Why? Well, it’s the most transitional season of them all and by decorating your home now with new colours and new furnishings, it will help lift the mood and brighten your home during the dark and cold months of winter. Even early spring can be miserable and slow to get going which is why doing all those decorative DIY chores in autumn has the potential to keep your home feeling revitalised during five months of dark and dreary weather (it is Ireland, after all!) This is precisely why it pays to make autumn your DIY deadline date.

The bright mornings and long evenings of summer are quickly fading into memory but no doubt they will have given plenty of food for thought on some of the jobs that need doing. The bright light of summertime can expose those fading wall colours and parts of the home that look jaded; now would be a good time to do a final crosscheck of places in need of some DIY rebooting. The same can be said for outside the home as the likes of house gates, external walls, driveways and guttering will all have shown signs of wear and tear. Make a list, check it twice, set yourself a budget and target (you can’t do everything) and get to work. You’ll be glad you did once winter sets in and your home is looking bright, new and refreshed. Autumn really is the best time for DIY.
