Special dinner marks half century of Celtic
WEXFORD Celtic FC has celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special dinner event in the Talbot Hotel.
On a night of great celebration fond memories were recalled of jubilant times for the oldest soccer club in the town.
A number of special guests were in attendance including the chief executive of the FAI, John Delaney, who made a number of presentations on the night.
On the night the club recognised three best players for each of the five decades it’s been in existence and they included: (1968-1978) Noel Morris, Mick Hurley and Tony Crosbie; (1978-1988) Tim McGrath, Nacey Brennan and Mick Carthy; (19881998) Toddy Wilson, Nicky Delaney and Jim Sutton; (1998-2008) Tim McGrath Jnr, Pat Sinnott and James ‘BA’ Bridges; and (2008-2018) Sean Carmody, Philip Cullen and Billy Martin.
Liam Spratt and Gerry Forde were MCs on the night and they did an excellent job keeping things moving along smoothly.
A special presentation was made by Mr Delaney to the first Chairperson of the club, Tom O’Hara, who has been involved since day one. He was recognised for his outstanding contribution to the beautiful game in the town and county.
Wexford Celtic FC had a women’s section for around 20 years and awards were also presented to the three best lady players from that period: Sabrina Furlong, Elva McManus-Lynch and Carmel Crowley.
It was a fantastic night with around 170 people attending. After the formalities they were entertained by music act Back 2 Back and a DJ.
