7 Things to do this week...

-

1 COUNTY SENIOR HURLING FINAL: For hurling fans, all roads lead to Innovate Wexford Park this Sunday as reigning county champions St Martin’s take on Gorey’s Naomh Éanna who have reached the Pettitt’s Senior Hurling county final for the first time in their history. St Martin’s overcame Ferns and the Rapparees in their quarter and semi finals, while Naomh Éanna saw off challenges from St Anne’s and Oylegate-Glenbrien on their path to the final. St Martin’s are bidding to claim their fourth senior title and win back-to-back championships, and have a squad that boasts county hurling stars such as Rory and Jack O’Connor, as well as plenty of big day experience through stalwarts like Ciaran Lyng and Daithi Waters.

But young guns Gorey impressed neutrals with the emphatic way in which they ground out their semi final win, with forwards Padraig Doyle and county star Conor McDonald instrumental in their second half performance against a dogged Oylegate-Glenbrien team. There will be a number of interesting battles all over the field in what should be an intriguing final battle for the 2018 title. 2 BEHIND THE JERSEY: ‘Behind the Jersey’ is aimed at tackling gambling addiction. Presented by Castletown Liam Mellows GAA Healthy Club, the event will include talks from Galway Hurler Justin Campbell, who is an addiction counsellor, and former Offaly intercounty footballer Niall McNamee, who will discuss his own gambling addiction. Nutritionist Colin Smith will also discuss how to build mental and physical health through correct nutrition. ‘Behind the Jersey’ will take place on Thursday, October 18, at 8 p.m., in the Ashdown Park Hotel. Tickets will be available on the door for €5. Under 16s are free, but the event is not suitable for any persons under the age of 14. 3 GALA NIGHT:

The highly anticipated gig will take place on Thursday, October 18, at 8.30 p.m. The set on the night will feature a broad range of songs from Kirwan’s long career including a lot of his well-known solo works in addition to tracks associated with his main band Black 47. Tickets for the gig - which is sure to sell out - are priced €15 and €13 and are now available from the Wexford Arts Centre box-office at 053 9123764. 7 THE SCOURGE: Local writer Michelle Dooley Mahon will tread the boards of the Arts Centre stage once again when she performs her deeply personal, biographical onewoman play ‘The Scourge’ on Friday and Saturday night (8 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (3 p.m.). Directed by Ben Barnes, the play relives Michelle’s visits to her mother Siobhan in a nursing home after she has been struck down by Alzheimer’s disease. At times hilarious, and always moving, ‘The Scourge’ shines a light on an illness that is rarely discussed in detail, taking the audience through the patient’s decline and the family’s implosion, particularly the impact it has on Michelle, the self-proclaimed scourge.
