WOMEN’S SHED DRAMA

The Shed ladies have had a busy few weeks putting on their Comedy Play Mrs Dooley’s Table during the Kathleen Browne Festival, and this week they entertained the clients and staff of Tagoat and Grantstown Day Care Centers. Mrs Dooley, the cast and crew have now finished performances and are taking a well earned rest. They’ll be back again next year with a new offering.

SCOUTS

All sections are back in full swing. Senan Murray was elected as a Scout Co Representative at the recent Youth Forum, senior Scouts and Ventures are preparing for the Blackstairs Challenge, postponed due to weather, and Cubs have the Co Tablequiz this weekend. Some parents are starting leadership training this week so we hope to be in a position to take in those on the waiting list shortly.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT

As the season draws to a close for a few months plans are already under way for further development works. A full lighting system will be installed around the walking track which will see completion of the final stage of the track development. The Astro facility will be refilled and brushed and building works on the clubhouse redevelopment will also begin over the coming weeks. All these works are only possible with the ongoing support of all our members and supporters and the club takes this opportunity to thank everyone for their ongoing support of all club activities and fundraisers.

KILLINICK IRONMAN

Local men Brendan ‘bear’ Wright and Thomas ‘Tucker’ Goff along with a few other crazies from Wexford travelled to Spain this past week to compete in the Barcelona Ironman competition. This test of endurance involved competitors completing 3.8km swim, 180km of cycling and 42.2km road race. 14 hours and 10 minutes later Brendan crossed the finishing line picking up a second place finish in his respective category (Male age 65-69). Tucker crossed the finish line half an hour before that. Massive well done to both on a huge personal achievement. This was Brendan’s second Ironman competition having completed one in Killarney five years ago.

This game was played in Ballymore on a pitch fit to host any standard of competition and a credit to those in charge of its maintenance. The game itself was a one sided affair with the home team leading 3-04 to 0-04 at halftime and were to run out winners on a scoreline of 4-15 to 0-05. SCHOOL SPORT NEWS

Congratulations to the girls of Mayglass and Broadway National Schools, who recently claimed victory in the Rackard League district final. The girls maintained their 100 per cent record in the competition so far by coming out on top against the schools of Crossabeg-Ballymurn in a competitive game. This is the third year in a row that our girls have reached a district final and full credit must go to their determination, tenacity, level of skill and all round commitment to making it third time lucky. They will now play a Co. semi-final, opposition and date still to be confirmed. Our boys’ teams put in three brave performances, however with a young team, their campaign ended before the final stages of the district. With lots of young talent coming through in this group we look forward to a bright future- to quote the boys, ‘bring on the hurling’.

In other news, the girls of Mayglass NS competed in the first round of the Cuman na mBunscoil mini sevens football tournament on Friday last, drawing Rathangan and Kilrane in our group. Playing at home in Mayglass gave us a great opportunity to utilise our fantastic school pitch, new goals and new ball stop nets. Being a knock out competition all was to play for from the word go. A strong Rathangan side accounted for Kilrane in the opening encounter, while Mayglass ended the hopes of the Kilrane side in the second game. With one win apiece, Mayglass and Rathangan had all to play for in the final game. To prove the home sides intent, they smashed home a goal in the opening seconds from long range and a relentless attacking display from a full Mayglass panel would eventually see the game beyond the reach of a gallant Rathangan. The next round of the mini sevens is due to be played on Tuesday the 23rd. Please keep an eye on club and school media for time and venue.

Our football lunchtime league has been in full swing for the last three weeks, and is now at the finals stages. Division 3 final went to Donegal, who beat Wexford in a thrilling display of football. Division 2 will see Mayo take on Tyrone, while Kerry and Clare take center stage in the Division 1 final this week. This league has been a huge success, with 36 children from third-6th class taking part. A big thanks to football games promotion officer Anthony Masterson for providing us with new footballs, bibs and a trophy for the winners. Rumor has it he may even referee the final this week.

Hurling 365 is up and running again since the start of October, every Tuesday from 8.15 a.m. to 9.15 a.m. We are having great fun, and are delighted to have so many new faces from seniors to sixth class. We extend thanks to 365 coach Willie Cleary for helping us out and to all the parents who have braved the early morning to be part of the 365 team. Anyone interested in helping out or joining our coaching team please contact the school or St Fintan’s GAA Club.
